Sagunto is a small town in the north part of Valencia province. It has existed for more than two thousand years. For all these years it has assumed the peculiar aspect in which there is a mixture of country features and urban landscapes, days gone by and the present, great things and insignificant ones.
Sagunto is situated at the foot of the hill where Sierra Calderonamassif starts. Sierra Calderona is considered to be the symbol of the town. The other symbol is its port. And at last the most interesting in Sagunto is its castle with lots of ancient fragments which were built by Romans and Moors.
In spite of the fact that Sagunto is situated at the sea coast, it is not a very popular resort. The tourists come here to see the ancient buildings and monuments. Besides there is a theatre in Sagunto, which was built at the epoch of Ancient Rome. There is also a Gothic Church of St. Maria in the main square of the town, a very attractive buiding of the Town Hall of the 18th century and an old Jewish block of buildings which is situated on the way from the town to the castle.
Though Sagunto is not a famous resort it is a nice place for summer holidays. To the north of the town port there are nice beaches stretching for 10 km with white sand and picturesque dunes: Puerto Sagunto, Almarda, Corinto, Malvarrosa. Each year each of these beaches receives “the blue flag” for its purity.
You may stay in inexpensive hotels 2-3* and in apartments in Sagunto. There is a Puerto Sagunto hotel 3* and Torre Corinto apartments.
If you want to buy a souvenir in Sagunto, the best variant is to buy a flask made by local masters. Flasks are made by hand. They are made of cork-tree and decorated by metallic patterns. The flasks are used as thermoses. In the past time the shepherds took such flasks to the pastures and the water in them was cool and tasty even if the weather was really very hot.
