El Palmar brings together natural landscapes, fishing history and Valencian cuisine within a compact thematic area. The village is located in the Parc Natural de l'Albufera, providing a special setting for a trip where you can combine landscapes, regional traditions and culinary experiences. Among rice fields, traditional boats, barracas and local dishes, a destination emerges that is best explored through its specific stories.

Albufera and wetland landscape

El Palmar is located in the Parc Natural de l'Albufera. The Parc Natural de l'Albufera associated with El Palmar is a freshwater lake formed from a former sea inlet. It is one of Spain's internationally significant wetlands, is included on the Ramsar List and is designated as a ZEPA bird protection area. The rice fields and wetland landscape therefore shape not only the appearance of the surroundings but also many of the experiences that begin in El Palmar.

Visitors can navigate between El Palmar's rice fields in traditional boats. Traditional boat trips around El Palmar also offer opportunities to observe birds and go birdwatching. An official two-hour Albufera–El Palmar experience provides insights into fishing, hunting and rice cultivation in the Albufera: during the first hour, the wetland landscape is visited and fishing is presented together with local fishermen; during the second hour, a boat trip takes place on the lake.

Fishing tradition and village character

The Comunidad de Pescadores de El Palmar was officially founded in 1857. It organizes a draw for fishing grounds in the Albufera, known as redolins. El Palmar's landing stage is also one of the village's defining places: it is an important location for fishing and tourism. After a meal, the pier is recommended as a place to watch sunsets.

The traditional barracas of El Palmar, built from clay and reeds, are part of the village's cultural character. The Iglesia Parroquial Jesuset de l’Hort in El Palmar dates from 1895. Until the middle of the 20th century, bundles of rice were threshed with machines at the landing stage. The rice grains were separated from the straw, while the straw was used to operate a steam engine. A visitor experience in El Palmar also includes a boat trip, a visit to the Museo Etnológico and rice cultivation as a topic.

Dishes with local history

All i pebre from El Palmar is prepared with eel and potatoes. Espardenyà is a lesser-known dish similar to all i pebre and has a history dating back one hundred years. In the Espardenyà from El Palmar, a duck sofrito is added to the all i pebre.

Since 2010, the traditional Villa del Palmar Allipebre Competition has taken place annually on the first or second Monday in July in the streets of El Palmar. At the “Taller de paella”, the organizers teach participants how to prepare a typical Valencian paella. The workshop also includes a competition between two teams for the best paella. The prepared dishes are then tasted; a guided visit to the natural park may also be offered.

Routes between El Palmar and the surrounding area

Various routes are available for active trips or excursion-based planning. The “El Palmar-L'Estell” route begins in El Palmar. Another route, “De Valencia a Sueca”, passes through El Palmar and also includes Valencia, Pinedo, El Saler, El Perellonet, El Perelló, Mareny de Sant Llorenç, Mareny de les Palmeretes, Mareny de les Barraquetes, Cullera and Sueca.

A circular route through large parts of the southern wetland landscape runs between El Palmar and the Muntanyeta dels Sants. This circular route is 25 km long and is recommended for travel by car or bicycle. When choosing a hotel in El Palmar, you can therefore consider whether your itinerary is focused more on the Albufera, fishing history, regional cuisine or one of the routes.
