Alicante between Castle Hill, Museums and Coast
In Alicante, urban history, the coast and routes through urban and natural areas come together. In the vicinity of Alicante is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, referred to as a castle. The present-day fortress dates back to the end of the 9th century during Muslim rule. The slopes also contain remains from the Bronze Age as well as Iberian and Roman finds.
Castillo de Santa Bárbara and Benacantil
Castillo de Santa Bárbara stands on Benacantil, the 166-metre-high mountain located by the sea. From there, Alicante Bay and the surrounding inland area can be seen. Two lifts have also been opened at the Castillo. They run inside Benacantil over a distance of 142.70 metres. A 204.83-metre-long tunnel leads to them from Avenida de Jovellanos, opposite Playa del Postiguet beach.
Art, Archaeology and Maritime Themes
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante, or MACA for short, is located in the historic centre opposite the Basilica of Santa MarÃa. The museum includes Casa de La Asegurada, the oldest civilian building in the city, which was built as a granary in 1685. The collections cover important movements in 20th-century art and include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and other graphic works, among other items.
The Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante, or MARQ for short, traces a path in its permanent exhibition from prehistory through the Iberian and Roman cultures and the Middle Ages to the modern era and the present day. Galleries dedicated to field archaeology, urban archaeology and underwater archaeology explain archaeological methods using staged displays, audiovisual media and interactive presentations. Museo The Ocean Race focuses on maritime themes: it is the only museum in the world dedicated to The Ocean Race sailing regatta and interactively presents more than 50 years of regatta history and developments in nautical technology through audiovisual installations, games and models.
Beaches and Marine Environment
The vicinity of Alicante contains several beaches with their own names: Playa del Postiguet, Playa del Cocó and Playa de Babel. The marine environment of Tabarca includes very clear waters, a species-rich biological community and seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica.
Easy Routes through Urban and Natural Areas
Alicante has an almost 50-kilometre network of urban routes and paths that crosses natural areas and urban zones. The individual routes are described as easy and are between 2 and 6 kilometres long.
