Iberian history in La Escuera and El Oral

La Escuera is an archaeological site from the fully developed Iberian period, dating from the late 5th to the 2nd century BC. It is located within the municipality of San Fulgencio in the province of Alicante, on a slope of the Barranco de Las Cueras. A building excavated at La Escuera in the 1960s by Solveig Nordström was interpreted as an Iberian temple.

El Oral also reaches far back into history: the site was inhabited between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, received Etruscan products and objects directly associated with wine, and participated in trade networks in the southern part of what is now the province of Alicante. The combination of settlement history, trade and connections with wine gives the archaeological themes a tangible cultural dimension.

Museum and local history

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de San Fulgencio displays finds from La Escuera, El Oral and the El Molar necropolis. These finds date from between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. The museum also has an educational section for school groups. In addition, the Iglesia Parroquial de San Fulgencio dates from the 18th century.

Huertas, nature and cycling loop

San Fulgencio is surrounded by agricultural huertas. Protected bird and plant species occur in the area around Hondico de Amorós and are unique to the region. The “Las Veredas” cycling loop passes through San Fulgencio, is an easy 26-kilometre route and can be completed in less than two hours.
