Sea, Harbour and Mediterranean Landscape

Moraira has an eight-kilometre-long coast that stretches around a traditional fishing harbour. The townscape extends from the coastline into Mediterranean landscapes characterised by pine trees and vineyards.

At El Portet, the Cap d'Or peninsula protects the beach. El Portet is a semi-urban beach approximately 300 metres long and 10 metres wide. The conditions are suitable for kayaking; there are also car parks and kayaks available there. An access channel is available for small boats. Hiking trails lead from El Portet to the Torre del Cap d'Or watchtower and the flora micro-reserve of the same name. Restaurants at El Portet serve fideuà and rice dishes with fish.

Les Platgetes consists of two small coves with clear water and alternating sandy and rocky areas. Les Platgetes has a promenade with a viewpoint, landscaped gardens and car parks. At Les Platgetes, the shoreline alternates between sand and rock; the promenade, viewpoint, landscaped gardens and car parks complement the two coves.

The Marjal del Senillar, a coastal wetland that has been declared a wildlife protection area, is located near L'Ampolla. L'Ampolla is close to Moraira town centre.

Trails and Coastal History

A signposted hiking route leads to Cap d'Or in Moraira and offers views of the bay. Route SL-V 51 begins near the Portet de Moraira and leads directly to the Torre del Cap d'Or watchtower. The SL-CV 51 route to the watchtower is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and takes about one hour for the return journey. The path from El Portet to the Torre del Cap d'Or thus leads from a beach area to a historic building. Allow approximately one hour for the return journey along this section.

The Torre del Cap d'Or was built in the 16th century on the orders of Felipe II and formed part of Moraira's coastal surveillance system. The Castillo de Moraira was built in the 18th century to protect the coast from attacks by pirates and Barbary corsairs. The Castillo houses a permanent exhibition about the watchtowers during the time of Felipe II, as well as a multilingual audiovisual presentation about the sea and piracy. The two buildings date from different centuries: the Torre from the 16th century and the Castillo from the 18th century.

Maritime Moraira

The Mediterranean waters around Moraira are suitable for sailing and scuba diving during much of the year. The Moraira Nautical Club operates a recognised sailing and rowing school with courses for beginners and further training in dinghy sailing. The club also has a diving centre.

A small, secluded rocky cove is lined exclusively with fishermen's huts.
