Rodriguillo between Wetlands, Vineyards and Rural Heritage
Rodriguillo combines an exceptional wetland with vineyards, religious heritage and rural cuisine. The village lies at an elevation of around 450 metres on the southwestern flank of Cabeço de la Sal. This creates a destination where nature observation, regional culture and the inland landscape exist in close proximity.
Wetlands and Paths through the Landscape
In the southwest of the municipality of Pinoso lies the Humedal y saladar del Rodriguillo-Faldar. The wetland is an endorheic cryptic wetland of great ecological and landscape importance. It is home to an exceptional flora and fauna adapted to this ecosystem, including many endemic species. The protected habitats of Community interest also include priority habitats.
The municipal environmental programme includes an excursion there. It presents characteristic plants such as species of the Limonium genus and tamarisks, the associated fauna, and measures to restore the area. Another municipal programme, “El Fartet y su hábitat”, combines talks about the species, its observation in aquariums and its captive breeding with an excursion to the El Prado wetland. There, the focus is on the species in its natural habitat, as well as measures to restore and renaturalise its habitat. El Prado is one of the Parajes of El Rodriguillo.
Route 8, “La montaña de sal”, is 42.6 km long, starting in Villena and ending at Cabezo de la Sal in Pinoso. It passes by El Rodriguillo and runs along its wetland. On the route from Pinoso via the CV-836 and then the CV-840, the El Rodriguillo wetland is located on the CV-840; reeds and rushes form the typical vegetation there.
Wine, Bodegas and Regional Cuisine
The vineyards around El Rodriguillo provide wine for bodegas in the village centre and in nearby Parajes. Some of these bodegas preserve older winemaking methods. Bodegas Volver offers daily guided tours of the vineyards and the winemaking process.
In 2026, five wines and products from the region can be tasted at Bodegas Volver. Advance booking is required for the visits; they are available in Spanish or English. Prices are approximate. The festivals of El Rodriguillo also reflect a strong regional food culture: traditional gachamigas, both soft and “ruleras”, were prepared over wood fires and eaten at a popular communal breakfast.
Festivals and Religious Heritage
The patron saint’s festivals of El Rodriguillo are held in honour of San Pascual Baylón on the weekend following his feast day in the calendar, 17 May. A patron saint’s celebration included a procession through the settlement’s main streets.
The hermitage of El Rodriguillo, built in 1691, was demolished in 1991 and replaced in 1993 by a more modern hermitage with a bell tower. According to local tradition, the older hermitage stood at a place where San Pascual stopped to rest on his journeys between the Franciscan monasteries of Orito in Monforte del Cid and Jumilla.
The acequias of El Prado and El Rodriguillo are also part of the rural heritage. These traditional irrigation systems belong to the agricultural and rural heritage of Pinoso.
