Algar is located on the Palancia River. The town combines this natural setting with walking trails, festivals and distinctive cultural sites. This creates a destination where, depending on your interests, you can combine routes through the surrounding area, local history and special events.
Festivals with a character of their own
The Festes Patronals in honour of Mare de Déu de la Mercé, Sant Pere Nolasc and Sant Ramon Nonat take place every year on the weekend closest to 24 September. During the San Antonio festival, residents and visitors roast meat and sausages over a large fire. Algar thus showcases both religious festival culture and a communal tradition centred on fire, meat and sausages.
Church and restored cistern
The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is an 18th-century church with a stone façade. Algar’s Arab cistern is known as an Aljibe and has been carefully restored. Together, the two sites give a cultural walk through Algar a clear architectural and historical focus, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single theme.
Water as a common thread
The Ruta dels Aljubs leads to five water reservoirs built in the first half of the 20th century. The Els Planets recreational area has barbecue facilities, stone tables and benches, and running water.
Walks around Algar
The Paseo del Amor begins beside the old public washhouses; it is a walking area with scenic views. It follows an accessible, well-maintained path from Algar’s town centre to the dam. The Embalse de Algar, also known as the Algar Reservoir, is approximately a 20-minute walk from the town centre. Hiking trails and other routes
The Cordel de la Rambla de Azuebar is a local hiking trail of approximately 5 km that passes through Algar. In addition, the VĂa Verde de Ojos Negros can be used on foot, by bicycle or in a wheelchair; individual ramps outside the original route alignment are excluded. Buildings, film and local tradition
The present-day Casa de la Cultura is located in the former house of the Baron of Algar. A Ruta del Cine has also been established for Algar, passing through all the filming locations of this film drama. The present-day Casa de la Cultura is therefore housed in a building with a historical connection to the Baron of Algar.
