Alginet between Cultural Heritage, Festivals and Landscapes

Alginet combines landscapes, architectural heritage and festivals to create a diverse local character. The municipality lies in the transition zone between Ribera Alta and Horta de València and stretches from the edge of the Albufera wetlands to the small Sierra Falaguera mountain range. Torre Luengo stands isolated among orange groves and has lost its appearance as a defensive fortification. A typical farmhouse is also one of the area's notable features. It has an entrance for carts, an animal stall and a hayloft. Such details point to an agricultural past, while the location between the edge of the Albufera and the Sierra Falaguera defines Alginet's landscape setting.

Historic Buildings in the Local Character

As a monument, the Palacio fortaleza del Señorío de Alginet is listed in the Inventario General del Patrimonio Cultural Valenciano. Castell dels Cabanyelles in Alginet was built in the 16th century. Its flanking towers were later removed to make way for the town hall. On the edge of the town, the Ermita de Sant Josep dates from the 19th century and contains a valuable altarpiece. The parish church of Alginet was built between 1654 and 1699 over an older church dating from 1330. Its bell tower and Communion chapel date from the 18th century. The town's architectural history therefore spans several clearly distinguishable periods.

Festivals, Theatre and Music

The events calendar has several main focuses. In July, the Sociedad Artística Musical organises the Villa de Alginet Orchestra Festival. The Mostra de Teatre Amateur Vila d'Alginet began in 2007 and presents four amateur theatre groups every Saturday in October. Outside the summer season, the Teatre Modern offers a regular programme of cinema and amateur theatre.

The patron saint festivities in the second half of August are also among the regular highlights. The programme includes Vaquetes, workshops, children's activities, dawn processions, communal dinners and evening events. The Sant Antoni festival preserves the traditional blessing of animals and is one of Alginet's most traditional and popular festivals. It also includes a Correfoc along Carrer Sant Antoni.
