Benetússer between rice mills, historic routes and festival traditions

Benetússer is shaped by waterways, historic transport routes and a vibrant festival culture. The various branches of the Acequia Favara irrigate the plain, run beneath the completely built-up town centre and channel their water into the Albufera. At the same time, its historic location on the King's Road from Xàtiva, or on the King's Road from Valencia to Madrid, now called Avenida del Camí Nou, encouraged good road and rail connections.

Mills, museum and protected architecture

For visitors interested in culture, several very different places form part of Benetússer's character. The Museu Història de Benetússer is a public municipal museum and is open to the public. The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro is one of the town's landmarks, an example of Catholic religious architecture in the Valencian Community, and is currently classified under urban planning regulations as a building with integral protection.

The history of the mills goes back a long way: the Molí de Benetússer dates from the Middle Ages, probably the early 14th century. The Molí de Favara, a 17th-century rice mill, houses Benetússer's Museu Arqueològic, with a permanent exhibition. Both sites connect the history of agriculture with the municipality's architectural heritage.

Another prominent building is the Molino Arrocero de la Estación. The three-storey rice mill was built in 1921 and has two attached, symmetrically designed sections. The present building is a Neo-Gothic brick structure; its rear may contain elements dating from the 14th century. The Puerta de Favara, by contrast, is a Mannerist structure that once provided access to the gardens of the palace that has since disappeared.

Historic routes and religious traces

The routes through the municipality also tell of earlier connections. In Benetússer, the Camí Nou, the former King's Road from Madrid to Valencia, follows the same route as the Via Augusta. The Camino de Santiago de Levante begins in Valencia; on its first stage, from Valencia to Algemesí, there is a stop at the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro.

Two types of livestock tracks also cross the municipality: the Vereda del Cementerio de Valencia, which follows the old road from Picasent, and the Colada del Azagador de Alfafar and the Colada del Azagador de l’Orba. Fallas and local festival traditions

During the Fallas, the streets of Benetússer fill with music, fire and colour; the Cremà takes place on 19 March. The Corpus Christi celebrations traditionally take place on the first Sunday of the Fiestas Mayores, which are attended by numerous local institutions and associations.

La Pasión can be traced back to 1949 in Benetússer and has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial since 1967. Scenes from the final days of Jesus's life are performed outdoors in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Plaza de la Iglesia and Calle Mayor. Residents, volunteers and amateur actors take part.

The Festes Majors 2026 include a celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos. This deeply rooted tradition once again fills the streets with music, colour, festive dress and a celebratory atmosphere.
