Barx: Trails, History and Regional Specialties

Barx offers several specific ways to experience its landscape, history and regional character. The PR-CV 60 Barx–La Drova is a 10.60-kilometre circular route that starts at C. Ausias March 45 in Barx. A shorter route is the PR-CV 60.1 Senda de la Marjaleta del Pi: it is 3.50 kilometres long and, with Barx as its reference municipality, leads through the region’s hiking landscape. Numerous short hiking trails run through the municipality of Barx. Hiking Trails with Natural and Scenic Highlights

The PR-CV 60 passes through the Barranc de Manesa Flora Micro-Reserve and runs very close to the Nevera de Barx. The Mirador de la Visteta offers panoramic views. The Ruta dels Monestirs GR-236 also passes through Barx. The Barranc de Manesa Flora Micro-Reserve, the Nevera de Barx and the Mirador de la Visteta each highlight different aspects of Barx, ranging from natural surroundings to historic structures and panoramic views.

Archaeology and Visible Local History

The Cova de les Malladetes is an archaeologically significant site in the Mondúver mountain range of Barx. Traces of societies from the Upper Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods have been discovered in the cave. Finds from the Cova de les Malladetes can be viewed at the Museu de Prehistòria de València or the Museu Arqueològic de Gandia. The site and its finds thus connect the cave location in the Mondúver mountain range with the two museums in València and Gandia.

One of the town’s prominent historic structures is the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel in Barx, which dates from the 17th to the 19th century. The Nevera de Barx dates from the 18th century. It was used to store snow that fell in winter and use it in summer. Another historical trace is provided by the Riu-Rau in Barx, which were formerly used to dry fruit. The original town centre of Barx is considered identifiable around Plaça de la Constitució. The church, Nevera and Riu-Rau differ in their dates and former functions. Together, these sites offer different insights into religious, everyday and communal aspects of the town’s history.

Festivals and Specialties from Barx

Local specialties from Barx include the sweet treats mones, pastissos and rossegons, figatells and rosemary honey.

Barx’s main festivals take place in the third week of August in honour of the Divina Pastora and Saint Michael. In addition, the gastronomic Mercat de la Terra has been held since 2016, except during the pandemic period. The festival calendar thus combines religious devotion with a gastronomic event in Barx.
