Castle, church and local history
Alaquàs combines a distinctive architectural heritage with cultural routes and festival traditions. The main attractions include Castell d'Alaquàs, the Iglesia de la Asunción, the irrigation canals and cultural tours. Castell d'Alaquàs was declared a historic-artistic monument on 21 April 1918 and a cultural asset of special interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) on 1 December 1999.
Its square floor plan is arranged around a central courtyard; four corner towers with battlements define the complex.
The Iglesia de la Asunción in Alaquàs is a 16th-century religious building on Plaza de la Iglesia and is classified as a locally significant cultural asset (Bien de Relevancia Local). Churrigueresque design, a single-nave layout without a dome and two entrance doors define its architecture.
A special connection to the Castell is created by an outer and an inner arch. Through this connection, the lords of the Castell could attend Mass without having to go outside.
Experience culture and put the tours into context
Since 2003, Castell d'Alaquàs has been used as a cultural and educational venue; its activities include exhibitions and conferences. A guided visit lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and includes admission to the Castell.
Las Acequias de Alaquàs follows a cultural route along the Sequieta, Terç, Roller and Dijous irrigation canals. The route conveys the water-related cultural heritage and its relationship with the everyday life of the population.
Ruta Los Nombres Antiguos de Nuestras Calles is a theatrically designed cultural tour for families. The meeting point at the start is at Plaza de la Constitución.
Festival traditions with a long history
The festival culture includes the Cordà del Crist de la Bona Mort. It has a history of more than 150 years and is a festival of provincial tourist interest. During the Cordà, fireworks are launched over a short period in an enclosed area; the Associació Amics de la Cordà d'Alaquàs promotes the necessary safety measures for this.
La Carxofa has been a festival of provincial tourist interest since 2010 and has been classified as a locally significant cultural asset (Bien de Relevancia Local) since 2022.
The Cant de la Carxofa is a musical composition from the 17th century that has survived, among other places, in Alaquàs. On the 8th and 9th of an unspecified month, it is sung by children.
