Canet D'en Berenguer between dunes, history and festivals

Beach, dunes and maritime activities

The Paseo Marítimo de Canet d’en Berenguer is 1,400 metres long, runs along the beach and blends into the natural dune landscape. The Cordón dunar de Canet creates a particular landscape feature: it serves as a resting and breeding area for Kentish plovers. This means that along the coast, both the design of the beach area and a specific connection with nature take centre stage.

The lighthouse and the history of the town

The Faro de Canet d’en Berenguer was built in 1904, is 30 metres high and has a range of 25 miles. It stands 300 metres inland at the site of a 16th-century watchtower that warned of privateer ships. The exterior area of the Faro offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The inside of the lighthouse is not open to the public; nevertheless, the building remains a notable feature in the town’s history and views of the sea.

The Iglesia parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol is located in the historic town centre. The Baroque church, built in the 18th century, is designated as a Bien de Relevancia Local. The Museo Etnológico de Canet provides an additional insight into an old farmhouse: there you can see Valencian clothing as well as tools used in fishing and agriculture. The museum also includes an eight-square-metre diorama depicting the town in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Festivals and Valencian traditions

The events calendar is shaped by religious and community festivals. Sant Antoni is celebrated in Canet D'en Berenguer in January and ends with the blessing of the animals. Sant Joan takes place on 23 June and includes bonfires on the beach. On 8 September, Canet D'en Berenguer celebrates the feast of the Virgen contra las Fiebres with a solemn procession.

The celebrations in honour of the Virgen contra las Fiebres originated in the 17th century after the appearance of a miraculous painting, which is said to have healed the inhabitants. Together with the Certamen de Teatre Vila de Canet, which provides a platform for non-professional theatre groups, this creates a cultural picture that extends beyond individual sights.
