Jarafuel: Springs, Cultural Heritage and Conifer Park

Jarafuel combines natural landscapes, local history and hackberry craftsmanship. Interlocking hills, mountains, valleys and rivers shape the landscape, complemented by interesting springs, historic buildings, an open-air botanical garden and a challenging mountain bike route. Springs and Landscapes

From Jarafuel, Fuente Bella can be reached via a paved road that leads approximately 3 km towards Carcelén. Fuente Bella is located in an extensive natural landscape characterized by pine trees. There are barbecue facilities, paella grills, picnic areas, water basins, fountains and a recreational area.

Fuente del Tobarro is located about one kilometre farther along the same route as Fuente Bella. The site offers a camping area, recreational areas, fountains, ponds, a shelter, toilets and showers. The approximate distance remains the key point of reference: Fuente del Tobarro is not on a separate path, but farther along the same route as Fuente Bella.

Church, Castle and Local History

The Church of Santa Catalina Mártir is a building in the Doric order and was completed in 1689. Inside, it has seven chapels and ten retables or altars. This gives the building several specific points of interest for a cultural and historical visit: its architectural order, year of completion and striking number of chapels and altars.

Jarafuel Castle is open to the public. In Jarafuel, Castillico is regarded as an Iberian settlement and archaeological site. The public washhouse tells another story of local everyday life: it was built around 1950 on the southern edge of the town beside the main road and was used for washing clothes. Together with the church and castle, it reveals both representative architectural history and practical local history.

Craftsmanship and Botanical Features

Hackberry craftsmanship in Jarafuel uses the tree’s light, tough and durable wood to make certain agricultural tools, including hay forks and handles, as well as walking sticks. The material is at the heart of the process: its properties explain why it is used for these different objects.

Jarafuel’s Conifer Park is an open-air botanical garden covering more than one hectare, with numerous conifer species from around the world. The park also features a monumental ginkgo biloba and the so-called “Tree of Forty Shields,” which originates from China. Visitors can therefore enjoy a clearly defined focus on nature and plants as part of their visit to the town.

A Challenging Route for Mountain Bikers

Centre-BTT Route 8, “Jarafuel, Muela de Juey y el Castillico,” is the longest and most challenging route in the Centre BTT. It has a total elevation gain of 1,200 metres and more than 600 metres of positive elevation gain, and is intended for particularly well-prepared and experienced mountain bikers.
