Jaraguas between Salt, Water and Winegrowing

Jaraguas lies at the confluence of the Albosa, de los Encaños and Salada ramblas. The village developed within the municipality of Venta del Moro into an important agricultural and winegrowing center. The three ramblas, agricultural development and winegrowing give Jaraguas several specific landscape and economic reference points within the municipality of Venta del Moro.

The Jaraguas Saltworks: Mina Lolita and Salt Production

The Jaraguas saltworks are called Mina Lolita and preserve a central well, around six smaller wells, approximately 25 crystallization ponds, and five areas for drying and loading the salt.

The saltworks were public land used by around twenty families from Jaraguas for salt production. Their history dates back to Iberian times: the saltworks near Jaraguas were already being exploited then. The village therefore combines a long agricultural and artisanal past with a landscape in which salt production and winegrowing exist side by side as part of the local history.

Fuente del Amparo with Washhouse and Group of Trees

The Fuente Amparo in Jaraguas is associated with a washhouse and a monumental group of poplars and willows. The Fuente del Amparo is dated 1911.

Festivals, the Mayos Tradition and the Chapel

The patron saints of Jaraguas are Saint Francis Xavier, celebrated on December 3, and Our Lady of the Forsaken, whose feast is held on the second Sunday in May.

The Mayos tradition in Jaraguas includes songs sung on the night of April 30 for the Virgin and for young women. The Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier in Jaraguas had a bell tower and was open and suitable for worship. Together, these two subjects show how festival customs and religious architectural history coexist in the village.
