Historic Traces in La Cuevarruz

For 2025, La Cuevarruz is associated with the designation “Núcleo Histórico Tradicional”. The Ermita de San José houses a Baroque woodcarving attributed to Ignacio de Vergara. For culture enthusiasts, the Ermita de San José and its Baroque woodcarving stand alongside the iron windmill and the small pelota frontón.

An old iron windmill stands at the entrance to La Cuevarruz. It is privately owned and currently out of operation. Next to the Fuente-abrevadero, there is also a small pelota frontón dating from 1866. Together, the two buildings complement the religious reference of the Ermita with a technical and a sports-related landmark.

Stages and Circular Routes

Around La Cuevarruz, trails lead as stages, shorter sections or circular routes to specific landscape features. The GR 37 E04 stage from La Yesa to La Torre passes through La Cuevarruz and Casas de Arriba and runs through impressive juniper forests. The juniper forests give the section its own landscape character alongside the passages through La Cuevarruz and Casas de Arriba.

Due to identified deficiencies in the signage and, in some places, in route continuity, the stage is classified as “condicionado”. Until the deficiencies are remedied, it is recommended to follow the route particularly attentively. When planning this stage, special attention should therefore be paid to the signage and route continuity.

The route from La Cuevarruz to La Torre passes through the Sabinar, past cereal and almond fields as well as the abandoned settlements of Pozo Marín and Cañada Pastores, before reaching La Torre. Part of its route coincides with the PR-CV331, the Sendero de las Travinas.

The section between La Cuevarruz and La Torre is offered as one of three shorter trails for people who do not complete the entire route. In addition, a 12.94 km circular route leads from La Cuevarruz to Alto de Sancho. It reaches the Sancho geodetic vertex at an elevation of 1,512 m and passes the Charca la Serranía and the Barranco de Virgen. The elevation of 1,512 m adds a fixed reference point for daily planning to the distance. The stated length provides a specific route framework for daily planning, while the section to La Torre is explicitly presented as a shorter trail. The route information can be taken directly into account when planning breaks.

Juniper Forests and Ravines

Cueva Negra is designated as a notable natural area in Cuevarruz. Another circular route from La Cuevarruz passes through the Barranco de las Cuevas del Agua, with geological formations and rugged landscapes. Cueva Negra and the Barranco de las Cuevas del Agua represent two different natural features: a designated natural area and a route with geological formations. The circular route to Alto de Sancho and the trail through the Barranco de las Cuevas del Agua focus on different landscapes among the trails around La Cuevarruz.
