Historic Buildings and Old Town
The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Salud dates from the 17th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; it also includes a bell tower and side chapels. The church is considered Xirivella’s most significant building.
Xirivella’s old town preserves a layout of Arabic origin. A number of old houses still stand along its narrow streets. La Closa is a restored 14th-century building in the former Cap de Baix. Casa del Dau also dates from the 14th century and was where rent payments were made to the Order of Calatrava.
Ceramic Images and Sacred Places
Xirivella has numerous ceramic altarpieces on building façades dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Stations of the Cross depict various scenes from Holy Week. In this way, religious imagery is combined in the townscape with a traditional form of ceramic design.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Salud is a small sacred building with a simple white façade. According to local tradition, it stands at the place where the image that gave it its name is said to have been found. The phrase “is said to have been” preserves the traditional character of this story.
Huerta and Agricultural Heritage
Xirivella is surrounded by the Huerta landscape. Its agricultural heritage includes irrigation wells, farmhouses and traditional cebere structures where onions were stored. This heritage can be explored on foot along a route or during a walk.
Mostra and Regional Cuisine
The Mostra Internacional de Pallasses i Pallassos de Xirivella takes place every year. In addition to humorous performances, it includes street entertainment activities, exhibitions, conferences, tributes, courses and workshops. The Mostra is recognised as an event of provincial tourism interest.
Xirivella’s cuisine includes rice dishes such as paella, arròs al forn and arròs amb fessols i naps. Typical sausages include botifarres de ceba and botifarres en oli. If you include regional dishes in your travel plans, this culinary focus complements the town’s architectural and landscape themes.
