Benimarfull between Valley, Village Life and Valencian History

Benimarfull is located in the Vall de Travadell, a valley connecting Gorga, Millena, Benillup and Benimarfull. Landscape between the Barranc and the Serpis

The Barranc del Sofre is one of the ravines that drain the municipality of Benimarfull and flow towards the Serpis River. The protected landscape area Paisaje Protegido del Serpis can be explored from Benimarfull and is noted for its biodiversity and varied landscapes. In the surrounding area, a hiking route leads to the Font d’Albacar, whose recreation area includes a pond. Depending on the time of year, a visit may coincide with the blossoming of almond or cherry trees.

Church, Museum and Art

The present-day church building in Benimarfull dates from 1663. The parish church of Santa Anna has the status of a locally significant cultural asset under Valencian cultural heritage law and houses altarpieces, sculptures and paintings. Today, the parish museum is located in the church’s 25-metre-high bell tower. As a result, several specific examples of religious art and local history are concentrated in a defining landmark.

Documents and August Festival

On 13 August 1611, Benimarfull received its Carta Puebla through legal provisions issued by Sancho Ruiz de Liori Folch Borja y Cardona. The Benimarfull–Benillup-Rectoría is considered the first known document in which the name Benimarfull appears. The August festival takes place on the first weekend of August in honour of Santa Ana, San Jaime and the Santísimo Cristo de la Buena Muerte. It includes a parade of Moros y Cristianos and a procession in honour of Christ.

Springs and Former Spa

Benimarfull has several sulphur springs; a spa was built at one of them. The sulphur-calcium Fuente de Santa Ana spring operated from 1847 to 1936, while the associated spa was permanently closed in 1940. The former spa consisted of two large buildings with 70 rooms. The history of the springs and spa adds another, now historical, local reference to the area’s cultural profile.
