Crevillent between archaeology, nature and regional cuisine

Crevillent combines archaeological remains, an old town centre with a strong Islamic influence, protected wetlands and paths through the Sierra de Crevillent. It also offers museums, traditional festivals and local cocas. If you would like to combine culture and nature on your trip, the town offers several specific focal points to help you plan.

Archaeology and history in Crevillent

Peña Negra is one of the most important archaeological sites in the southeast and east of the Iberian Peninsula from the first half of the 1st millennium BC. The site is significant for understanding the transition from prehistoric to protohistoric societies and the origins of Iberian culture. The Museo Arqueológico de Crevillent presents local history from the Upper Palaeolithic, around 30,000 years ago, through the Chalcolithic, the Bronze Age, and the Iberian and Roman periods to the Islamic period.

Crevillent’s oldest town centre preserves its original urban structure, which has a distinctly Islamic character. Calle San Francisco is no more than 2 metres wide. Canyada Joana, a Roman rural villa with a torcularium for olive oil production, is another of the town’s historical attractions. La Fábrica Gran was founded in 1823 and later employed more than 1,000 people.

The Moros y Cristianos celebrations include a theatrical performance set in the 13th century, staged against a castle backdrop erected in Plaza de la Constitución. A museum houses 24 of the 32 floats depicting scenes from Crevillent’s Semana Santa and has four exhibition floors. There, a selection from a collection of 333 works is presented across eight exhibition areas.

Wetlands and nature experiences

El Hondo Nature Park is a protected wetland listed as a Ramsar site and designated as a ZEPA bird protection area. The nature park’s information centre is located within the municipality of Crevillent. It has a permanent exhibition, an audiovisual room and an adapted recreational area.

El Hondo can be explored via paths and various footbridges; observation towers allow visitors to watch numerous birds. Parque de Montaña San Cayetano has a spring, a hostel, toilets, fountains, a viewpoint and picnic tables with permanently installed benches.

Hiking, cycling and regional cuisine

The Sierra de Crevillent is used for hiking and cycling along its paths and trails. The PR-CV 109 Senda Dolça hiking trail is promoted by the Centre Excursionista de Crevillent, is 12.20 km long and has an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 50 minutes. Its certification status is “Conditioned quality control”.

Crevillent’s bakeries offer various local cocas all year round. These include varieties with anchovies, vegetables, sardines, tuna and egg, ham, pisto and molletes.
