El Chaparral: Lagoons, Nature Trails and Coastal Experiences
El Chaparral combines a distinctive lagoon landscape with nature trails, wildlife-watching experiences, beaches and museums. The two lagoons in the nature park are separated by an anticline called El Chaparral. As a result, the area has a clear landscape connection to a natural environment that can be explored in various ways.
Between a Pink and a Green Lagoon
The mountain area of El Chaparral belongs to the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja nature park. One particularly characteristic feature is the different colours of the two lagoons: the Laguna de Torrevieja is pink, while the Laguna de La Mata usually remains green. This gives visitors a natural setting with clearly distinct landscape impressions, without the two lagoons having the same character.
Trails Through Nature and the Landscape
The VÃa Verde de Torrevieja is a route just under seven kilometres long. It combines a city walk with a nature trail along the Laguna Rosa. Its manageable length and the transition between city walk and nature trail give this experience a clear structure for planning your day.
Another focus on nature is the Ruta ornitológica Las lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja. It is a nature experience in the protected wetland, where you can discover the lagoons’ diverse birdlife. This part of the landscape is therefore particularly suited to travellers who want to combine bodies of water, wetlands and birdwatching.
On a nature walk starting from Urbanización El Chaparral, rocky and sandy sections typical of the region alternate. The vegetation is adapted to the Mediterranean climate and includes native flora. The route therefore represents a landscape in which not only the colours of the lagoons, but also the soil, rock and plants shape the character of the natural environment.
In the area around El Chaparral, Ruta 8 exterior follows the Camino de El Chaparral back to Los Montesinos.
El Acequión and Beaches in the Surrounding Area
El Acequión is a worthwhile place to visit in the Parque Natural de La Mata-Torrevieja nature park. Within this protected natural environment, the site is another point of interest between the lagoons and the landscape.
Beaches are also part of the regional experience around El Chaparral. Playa Chula and Moncayo beach are located nearby. Playa del Acequión and Playa del Cura are also in the surrounding area. The different beach names expand the landscape to include coastal destinations, without equating the nature park and its lagoons with the beaches.
Museums and an Ancient Site
Several museums with distinct names and themes are located in the immediate vicinity of El Chaparral: the Sala de Exposiciones Los Aljibes museum, the Museo de la Habanera museum and the Submarino S-61 - Museos Flotantes museum. Geriátrico Amanecer is also located in the area around El Chaparral and is an ancient site. Alongside nature walks, lagoons and beaches, this gives travellers specific cultural attractions to include in their plans.
