If you would like to combine nature, trails through mountain landscapes, local history and regional festival traditions, Callosa D'en Sarrià offers several specific points of interest. The PR-CV 49, Les Fonts d'Algar, the Museo de Etnología y Arqueología and the local festivals reveal different sides of the town.

Mountain trails and a nearby ascent

The PR-CV 49 begins in the upper part of Callosa d'en Sarrià near the IES. The trail passes through a mountain landscape characterised by deep gorges and mountain passes with wide-ranging views. Another option is the Calvari: this approximately 700-metre-long peri-urban zigzag ascent begins at the last house in the town centre and ends at a hermitage on Calvari Hill.

Les Fonts d'Algar between water and karst

Les Fonts d'Algar was designated a protected wetland in 2002. A 1.5-kilometre circular route follows the course of the Algar River through a limestone karst landscape. Waterfalls, springs and the pools known as “tolls” form part of the landscape. Visitors can bathe in the clear water of these pools. For planning your day, Les Fonts d'Algar also offers a tourist office, car parks, toilets, first aid, an arboretum, a picnic area and a second-category campsite.

The route to Fort de Bèrnia

The El camino al Fort de Bèrnia route connects Les Fonts d'Algar with Fort de Bèrnia. The ascent offers views of the Aitana and Xortà mountain ranges. At the fort, the arches, moat, bastion, cistern and remains of the walls can still be seen. Fort de Bèrnia has been classified as a BIC, a Site of Cultural Interest, since 1997.

Local history in stone and everyday life

The Museo de Etnología y Arqueología de Callosa displays and explains objects that shaped the local folk culture and the customs of the various societies that lived in the town and its natural and urban surroundings throughout its more recent history. The museum also documents local rural activities, crafts, occupations and products. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista has a monumental façade made of marble from local quarries. El Portal is now the only remaining gate of Callosa d'en Sarrià. El Poador de la Font Major is an 18th-century washhouse and livestock watering trough with twelve spouts.

Festivals and loquat cuisine

The festivals in honour of Sant Jaume in Callosa d'en Sarrià have been documented since 1819. During the Danses de Sant Jaume, people dance at midnight in Plaza de España for three days each year. The dance begins with several pairs, known as the “caps de dança”, and continues until dawn with the participation of local residents and the attending public. The Moros y Cristianos festivals in honour of the Virgen de las Injurias feature special dances such as the “ball de les pastoretes” and the “ball dels nanos”. Gastronomically, the Mostra de Cuina del Nyespro adds its own distinctive touch: it begins in early May and lasts until June; at weekends, various restaurants in Callosa d'en Sarrià prepare dishes and specialities whose main ingredient or accompaniment is the local fruit, the loquat.
