San Miguel de Salinas: Culture, Nature and Regional Cuisine

San Miguel de Salinas combines a dense Aleppo pine landscape with traces of Iberian, Roman and Arab cultures, as well as a distinctive local architectural tradition. Landscape, Wildlife and Cultural Traces

A dense Aleppo pine landscape surrounds San Miguel de Salinas. It includes scrubland and areas covered with thyme, which give the natural area a variety of structures. Wildlife in the natural surroundings includes red-legged partridges, turtle doves, eagle owls, common buzzards, wood pigeons, weasels, rabbits and foxes. At the same time, there are archaeological remains of various successive cultures, including Iberian, Roman and Arab cultures. The Sierra Escalona landscape and its surroundings were designated a protected landscape in 2018.

Buildings with a History of Their Own

The church dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel is located in Plaza de la Libertad. The Casa Lo Meca offers another example of rural architectural heritage: the building dates from the late 18th century, is arranged around a central courtyard and separates the rooms of the owners from those of the people employed on the estate. As a typical farmhouse of the dryland region, Casa Lo Meca has a wine cellar and an oil mill. The Casas Cueva are a distinctive local building and architectural tradition of particular cultural and ethnological significance. They include the designations Pueblo Troglodítico I and II. The Molino de la Tía Pelá is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local in San Miguel de Salinas; only its millstones remain. The Molino de Viento del Marqués, by contrast, is a cylindrical stone structure in an elevated location and offers extensive views from there.

Routes for Different Interests

The Ruta Miradores del Balcón de la Costa leads to viewpoints offering unique landscape views across the Vega Baja. The V Circular a Rebate is a cycling tour that crosses the Rebate mountain pass. The San Miguel pueblo de cuentos route offers a playful way to explore the town: hidden fairy-tale characters can be sought on the façades of houses and buildings in San Miguel de Salinas. This route can be undertaken with family or friends and in any order you choose. San Miguel de Salinas is also included as a municipality in the official Ruta 15: De Orihuela a Elx. The IV Jornadas “Somos Campo de Salinas” take place in San Miguel de Salinas between November 2 and November 16 and focus on local traditions, gastronomy, history and agricultural culture. Traditional cuisine from the surrounding area includes gazpacho manchego, cocido con pelotas, rice with rabbit, arroz con costra, as well as gazpacho with partridge and hare. Arroz con costra is particularly associated with the Vega Baja del Segura.
