Mutxamel between cultural heritage, waterways and regional cuisine

Mutxamel combines historic townscapes, water-related cultural heritage, protected landscapes and a distinctive festival and food culture. This gives you a destination whose character is not reduced to a single attraction: in the town centre, along the irrigation channels and in the north-east of the municipality, there are different reasons to engage with the history and traditions of the town.

Historic places and garden culture

Ravalet is the first town centre of Mutxamel. The houses arranged around a square, the narrow streets, as well as the roofs and façades, point to an Arab origin. Another defining place is Iglesia El Salvador, the most important religious building in Mutxamel. Its construction began on 16 February 1513 and was not completed until approximately a century later. The Gothic tower attached to the church dates from the 15th century, is now a bell tower, measures 23.5 metres and once protected the population from pirate attacks.

Peñacerrada also represents Mutxamel’s historical diversity. Since 24 January 2008, the Palace and Gardens of Peñacerrada have belonged, in the Historic Garden category, to the first section of the General Inventory of Valencian Cultural Heritage as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The Jardines de Peñacerrada combine French, English and Italian styles. The Azudes de Mutxamel and de Sant Joan are also located in the municipality of Mutxamel and have been classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

Waterways and natural areas

The irrigation of the Huerta de Alicante forms a distinct common thread. At the Centro de Interpretación Les Fontetes, you can learn about the traditional irrigation system; the centre also explains how the weir works and its importance. Two local hiking trails and the Camins d’aigua route start from this centre. The Ruta Assut Nou – El Cantalar connects water-related cultural heritage sites along the Rio Seco, including the Azud de Sant Joan and the Acequia del Gualeró.

The Ruta turística Mutxamel histórico runs along the former Acequia mayor. It provides information about the irrigation system of the Huerta de Alicante, the weir towers there, traditional types of houses and notable people who were born or lived in Mutxamel. For a different view of the town, the Ruta turística Arcadi Blasco takes you on a circular walk through Mutxamel to important places from the artist’s life and work, including the Fuente de la Torre Vigía.

Bec de l’Aguila is located in the north-east of the municipality. The area was designated as a Microrreserva de Flora by an order of the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente of the Generalitat Valenciana dated 4 May 1999. At the same time, Bec de l’Aguila is a recreational area for hiking and cycling tourism. This means that water-related routes and natural attractions complement the historic walks, without both types of experience requiring the same theme.

Festivals and cuisine from Mutxamel

The Moros y Cristianos festivals have been celebrated in Mutxamel for more than 150 years. They take place from 7 September to 12 September and received recognition from the Generalitat Valenciana in November 2020 as a festival of regional tourist interest. The festivities in honour of San Antonio Abad on Calle El Salvador are also firmly connected with local life. They can be traced back to the 18th century and include bonfires, horses, a procession and the blessing of the traditional Bollito. An outdoor mass, music, dancing and raffles are also part of the celebrations.

In March, cuisine takes centre stage at the annual Jornadas de la cuchara. Participating restaurants offer menus featuring traditional stew dishes from Mutxamel’s cuisine. The local gastronomic identity also includes Muchamiel tomatoes, broad beans, bread from Mutxamel baked in a wood-fired oven and confectionery.
