Petrer: Roman Mosaic, Castle and Cave Houses

Petrer combines a Roman past, medieval fortress architecture, historic residential culture and the inland dune of Arenal del Almorxó. Villa Petraria, Petrer Castle and the cave houses represent different historical layers of the town. Added to these are the dune’s distinctive flora and fauna, festivals and a nighttime history programme.

Villa Petraria: Roman traces

The Roman mosaic of Villa Petraria was discovered in 1975. The discovery of the mosaic showed that Petrer’s origins date back well before the Muslim period.

The oldest phase of the Roman remains at Villa Petraria comprises private baths dating from between the 1st century and the beginning of the 4th century AD. Alongside the mosaic, the baths are another structural part of Villa Petraria.

Several centuries separate the Roman baths, the fortress built by Muslim inhabitants and the residential buildings that were constructed later.

Petrer Castle and Cave Houses

Petrer Castle is a fortress built at the end of the 12th century by the Muslim inhabitants of Bitrir. The complex consists of an upper citadel, the Alcazaba, and a lower esplanade enclosed by a defensive wall.

The cave houses of Petrer were built at the beginning of the 20th century as homes on the land surrounding Petrer Castle. Their construction therefore took place centuries after the castle was built, but they remain spatially connected to its surroundings.

The restored cave houses beside the castle walls can be visited as an ethnological experience. Household objects, as well as tools and equipment used in traditional crafts, have been preserved inside them.

Residential buildings, household objects and equipment used in traditional crafts give this area its own connection to the history of living and working.

Arenal del Almorxó: Dune and Ecosystems

Arenal del Almorxó is an inland dune of sedimentological and geomorphological interest, with ecosystems featuring distinctive flora and fauna. The dune is therefore both a landform and a habitat. For those interested in culture, this landscape broadens the view of Petrer beyond its castle, mosaic and historic homes.

Access is via the A-31 towards Madrid, taking exit 201 (Elda Hospital) and continuing through the Les Pedreres industrial estate. The specific access route is therefore part of navigating the area around Arenal del Almorxó.

Festival Traditions and Evening Programme

The Moros y Cristianos festivities in Petrer date back to the 18th century. In honour of Saint Boniface, they were celebrated from Thursday to Monday in mid-May. Their religious connection is therefore as much a part of the festivities as their long historical tradition.

“Petrer se Viste de Luna” is a nighttime journey through the history of Petrer. Alongside the festivities, the evening programme provides a nighttime setting for the town’s history.
