Benijófar: Huerta, Segura River and historic routes

Benijófar combines the traditional huerta with the Segura River, cultural heritage and paths through its agricultural landscape. This creates a destination where you can combine nature watching, easy walks, cycling routes, architecture and regional cuisine.

Between the Huerta and the Segura River

The route Pasear por Benijófar focuses on the traditional huerta, the municipality’s farmland and the Segura River. It is signposted with green-and-white trail markers and has interpretive information panels. The river irrigates Benijófar’s farmland and forms a rich ecosystem along its final stretch. There, you can observe waterfowl, amphibians, reptiles, insects and fish.

Another option for walking or cycling is the Benijófar–Guardamar del Segura route. The approximately 11-kilometre route runs from Plaza de la Constitución to the lighthouse in Guardamar. The SL-CV 135 walking trail passes without difficulty through Benijófar’s agricultural landscapes and is of cultural interest.

Church and Noria Árabe

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol is considered Benijófar’s most representative building and is a central part of the municipality’s history and culture. Inside, it preserves Baroque elements, including six altarpieces and a monstrance made of glass, silver and gilded silver.

Outside the town centre, the Noria Árabe stands in a meander on the right bank of the Segura River. It was built in 1659 and is catalogued locally as an Asset of Cultural Interest because of its historical-artistic, architectural and hydrological character. Its location connects a historic structure with the river landscape.

Nature experiences and planned spaces

El Secano is an ecological recreational park in an old meander of the Segura River near Benijófar. Its facilities include plantings of native trees, picnic tables with benches and barbecue areas. A park is planned for Cañada Marsá on an area of 125,000 m², with sensory gardens, lakes, vegetation areas featuring native species, a sports track, cycling areas, an exercise area and an open-air theatre.

Festivals and cuisine

Benijófar’s festive cuisine includes Cocido con pelotas and Arroz con conejo y serranas. The patron saint festivities take place in July in honour of San Jaime and in December for the Purísima. During the San Jaime celebrations, the traditional Patatá is part of the festivities. At an event in Benijófar, visitors can also sample up to 25 typical dishes from various European countries.

The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle on the Benijófar–Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata–Moncayo–Guardamar–Rojales route. It follows the cycle path towards Torrevieja to the Lagunas de la Mata, complementing the shorter connection to Guardamar with another documented route option.
