La Murta y La Casella: Natural Landscape with Historical Significance
The La Murta y La Casella municipal natural area was designated in 2004, is located within the municipality of Alzira and covers 765.64 hectares. It is significant in ecological, natural, landscape-related, cultural and archaeological-historical terms.
La Murta y La Casella features rugged mountain ranges, fertile valleys, caves and viewpoints overlooking Ribera Baixa and Ribera Alta. The different landscapes give the nature theme several perspectives and make it clear why hiking, views and geological or landscape impressions are so closely linked here.
Hiking Connections and Links to Valencia
The Pas del Pobre is the final section of the Ruta dels Monestirs. It offers hikers spectacular views of the valleys of Aigües Vives, La Casella and La Murta before the route reaches Alzira and La Murta Monastery. The section therefore represents both wide-ranging views and the transition back to Alzira.
The GR-236 connects the RENFE railway stations of Gandia and Alzira; both stations offer hourly train services to Valencia every day.
Archaeological Traces and Protected Cultural Heritage
In the “Islamic Wall” section of the MUMA, a decorated wall from the 12th to 13th century is on display; it was discovered during archaeological excavations. The MUMA collections include materials from prehistory through the 15th century, as well as historical and artistic materials from the 18th and 19th centuries. An archaeological window reveals the original flooring and preserved sections of the original walls.
The ruins of the Monasterio de los Jerónimos de Nuestra Señora de La Murta are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Together with the preserved sections of walls and flooring in the MUMA, this creates a clear focus on visible historical traces and protected heritage.
Fallas, Semana Santa and Stage Culture
The Fallas tradition in Alzira includes a costume parade, an awards ceremony, a flower-offering ceremony and a Pasodoble parade. During the main Fallas days from 16 to 19 March, the Fallas casals and revetles in Alzira remain open to visitors until late at night.
The established cultural programme of the Gran Teatre d’Alzira includes theatre for young people and adults, family theatre, theatre campaigns for schools, music concerts, zarzuelas and dance performances. In addition, Semana Santa in Alzira is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.
