Teresa de Cofrentes: History, Nature and Cycling Tours

Teresa de Cofrentes brings together a historic townscape, natural formations and two cycling routes of varying difficulty.

Historic Townscape

In the historic centre of Teresa de Cofrentes, the street layout displays medieval-Islamic features, while the houses preserve traditional architectural characteristics. The Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción was built from 1636 onwards. According to older accounts, it stands on the remains of a mosque built between the 11th and 12th centuries and an Arab square. The townscape therefore combines visible architectural forms with a complex past.

Traces of History and Craftsmanship

Concrete historical traces can also be found beyond the church building. Castillico de Palaz preserves the remains of an earlier castle and its keep; the site belonged to a former Morisco settlement called Palaz. The Museo Almazara displays traditional machinery used for the cold pressing of olive oil. A hermitage in Teresa de Cofrentes was blessed on 3 February 1702 and leads to the town cemetery.

Natural Formations in the Surrounding Area

Pico Caroche is 1,126 metres high and lies at the south-eastern corner of Teresa de Cofrentes. Sima del Ayatonero is considered a natural monument and can be reached via a signposted path. Inside the Sima is an Almez tree more than 150 years old, popularly known as Ayatonero. Cueva Negra is a natural shelter approximately 40 metres long and 6 metres deep that has provided protection for people since prehistoric times.

Cycling Tours of Varying Difficulty

Two clearly distinct routes are the main options for cyclists. Ruta de los Albares/Nacimiento is an easy cycling tour with little climbing through olive and almond groves to Castillico de Palaz. Subida a Caroche/Bayart is a moderately difficult 30- to 40-kilometre cycling tour lasting approximately six hours and combining paved roads with forestry tracks.

For the easy route, the limited climbing, the course through olive and almond groves and the destination of Castillico de Palaz are part of planning the outing. For Subida a Caroche/Bayart, on the other hand, a day section of around six hours, 30 to 40 kilometres and the change between paved roads and forestry tracks must be taken into account when planning the day's excursion.

Castillo de Ayora is located in the vicinity of Teresa de Cofrentes. The mountain Rincón del Peñón del Moro and the peak el Caroig are also nearby. In the wider region are the peak Peñón de los Machos, Castillo de Almansa, Museo Batalla de Almansa, Palace of Condes de Cirat and the Sierra del Mugrón mountain.
