Trails through landscape and history
The signposted SL-CV 140 leads through the former Muslim gardens of the Foia de Salem and through a landscape thousands of years old with an exceptional hydraulic heritage planned by Muslims. With a low level of difficulty, it is considered suitable for all groups. The Senda dels Nevaters (SL-CV 122) leads to the former ice houses Castellet or Barcella (706 m above sea level) and Paller (756 m above sea level). Ice was stored in these ice houses and later distributed to neighbouring villages.
Benicadell and springs in the Foia de Salem
The Benicadell is part of the natural landscape of Salem and its surroundings. Several trails lead to its summit, including challenging routes; the area is suitable for hiking, climbing and mountain biking. The Foia de Salem also has numerous springs. They are considered visible surface manifestations of aquifers beneath the region’s limestone mountains. The range of landscapes therefore extends from summit trails shaped by sporting activities to the water-related features of the Foia de Salem.
Buildings ranging from mill to fortress and caves
Several historical periods stand side by side in the historic buildings. The MolĂ de la Font del Cantal dates back to the time of the Moors and was remodelled into its present form between the 17th and 19th centuries. The Castell de la Barcella is a small Islamic fortress from the 12th century that occasionally served as a watch and signal post between the 11th and 13th centuries. The Pont del MolĂ is a picturesque bridge beside the mill. Its round arch spans the Barranc de la Font del Cantal.
Barranc de les Coves, also known as Dalt de l’Almud, Abrigo I, is registered as an archaeological zone in the General Inventory of Valencian Cultural Heritage. The circular route at the Barranc de les Coves can be visited as part of a tour arranged in advance; this allows you to see the caves up close and learn about their history.
Traditional festivals in Salem
The festivals also give Salem a clearly defined cultural rhythm. Salem’s major patron saint festivities take place between 13 and 29 September in honour of San Miguel, San Roque, the Divina Aurora and Cristo de la Paz. The Festes de Moros i Cristians in Salem are a traditional festival celebrated on the second weekend of July in honour of the Mare de Déu del Rosari and the Divina Aurora.
