Jativa between Fortress, Old Town and Nature

Jativa can be explored through specific places: a striking double fortress, a historic town centre, several museums and the Cova Negra natural area. Castell de Xàtiva is divided into Castell Menor and Castell Major. It is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural and offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.

Old Town and Architectural History

The old town of Xàtiva was designated a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico in 1982. A leisurely stroll offers the chance to explore its monumental cultural heritage. The Iglesia de Sant Feliu was built in 1265 after the Christian conquest by Jaume I and stands on the remains of a former Visigothic cathedral. Its Romanesque portal is one of the few examples of this architectural style in the Valencian region.

Art and Archaeology

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Xàtiva houses one of the most important public collections of paintings in the Comunitat Valenciana. The artists represented include Ribera, Goya, Vicente López, Santiago Rusiñol, Benlliure and Antoni Miró. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum regularly presents temporary exhibitions. The Museo del Almodí is located in a former grain exchange built in the mid-16th century. As an archaeological exhibition venue, it displays Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim objects.

Walking Tour and Getting There

The Ruta de los Borja is a walking tour through Xàtiva’s old town, taking in buildings and places associated with the Borja family. For rail travellers, the ADIF station is located in the town on Avenida Ausiàs March, about ten minutes from the historic centre. RENFE commuter line C-2 connects València Nord, Xàtiva and Moixent. This connection can be a helpful point of reference when planning a stay without a specific focus for excursions.

Cova Negra: Nature and Prehistory

The 57-hectare Cova Negra is located in the immediate surroundings of Xàtiva. It is a municipal natural area of ecological and cultural-historical value. Its vegetation combines riverside and mountain vegetation. The paths offer opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. The Cova Negra archaeological site is also located in the same immediate area. It is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural and contributes to understanding European prehistory and the life of Neanderthals.

A Notable Date in August

La Fira d’Agost takes place from 15 August to 20 August in the streets and squares of Xàtiva. It combines fairground attractions, market stalls and cultural activities.
