Alfafara between Natural Park, Caves and Village Culture

Alfafara combines hiking experiences in the Serra de Mariola with caves, religious sites and festivals. The Serra de Mariola Natural Park partially encompasses the municipality of Alfafara.

Hiking between the Waterfall and the Serra de Mariola

The “EL PANTANET – NECRÓPOLIS MAS DEL POU” route begins at a waterfall in a natural setting. It is 4.78 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level and has a stated effective walking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Another option is the “ALFAFARA – CABEÇÓ DE MARIOLA” route. In around an hour, it climbs more than 500 metres in elevation and offers views spanning several dozen kilometres. Explanatory panels about the Iberians are also part of this route.

Caves, Gorge and Natural Surroundings

The Cova de les Finestres consists of artificial troglodytic caves built as agricultural storage and utility spaces. There are 12 caves carved into the rock in total, accessible via a wooden staircase.

The Molí Rupestre del Pantanet is integrated into the limestone of the gorge. It is located in a cave near the Barranc del Pantanet, beside a small waterfall, and is open to visitors.

Religious Sites and Town Centre

The Ermita de la Mare de Déu i Sant Antoni stands in a pine forest near the town and is designed in the style of Neoclassical Renaissance. Its grounds include a recreational area suitable for spending a day outdoors with the family. In the town centre, L´Esglèsia de la Transfiguració del Senyor stands next to the town hall. It was built in the 18th century and is a religious building of high cultural heritage value for the local population.

In the old town, the Font de Dos Xorros is located next to the washhouse. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century and receives natural water from the spring of the Cova de la Font.

Festivals in August

The Festes patronals d’Alfafara officially begin on 6 August and are designated as a festival of tourist interest. On 7 August, the Divina Aurora is celebrated with a pre-dawn wake-up ritual featuring singing and a procession through the town’s streets. On 9 August, the patron saint festivities conclude with a communal dinner and a parade of “filaetes” by the Moros y Cristianos.

Orientation for Nature and Route Enthusiasts

The Centre d’Interpretació Turística of the Mancomunitat de l’Alcoià i el Comtat is aimed at visitors who use the Via Verda del Xitxarra or wish to experience the Serra de Mariola. There, you can learn about nature tourism as well as hiking and cycling routes, and take part in guided routes and activities. Alfafara town centre can be reached via the local CV-700 road. It runs from Muro d’Alcoi to Bocairent and connects the N-340 national road with the CV-81 regional road.
