Between a Fortified Height and a Vibrant Festival Culture

Alcoy combines archaeological evidence, medieval traces and a strong festival tradition. El Puig d'Alcoi is a fortified Iberian hilltop settlement dating from between the 7th and 4th centuries BC. At the Conjunto Medieval de Alcoy, the history goes back to the foundation of the Villa de Alcoy in 1256. The Recinto Amurallado de Alcoy also dates from the 13th century. Few remains have survived, including the layout of the complex and some of its distinctive towers.

The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos de Alcoy are among the defining cultural events. They hold the status of a Festival of International Tourist Interest and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Special Interest. Another form of local memory is represented by the Betlem de Tirisiti: this puppet theatre performance with rod puppets has existed since the late 19th century and includes scenes from everyday life in earlier Alcoy, as well as depictions of Moros y Cristianos processions.

Culture Between Museum and Virtual Exploration

The Archaeological Museum of Alcoy presents a thematically and chronologically organised selection of archaeological materials in a permanent exhibition covering 192 m². The interior of the Casa del Pavo offers an additional perspective on the city's history. It is one of four notable buildings in Alcoy that visitors can explore as part of a virtual reality project because they cannot be visited physically.

QR codes on the façades of the participating buildings provide access to an immersive 360-degree experience via personal mobile devices or Oculus virtual reality headsets. The modernist virtual reality project offers information in sign language and five spoken languages. This creates different forms of interpretation alongside one another during an exploration of the city: archaeological materials in the museum, preserved architectural remains and digital insights into interiors that cannot be accessed physically.

The rock shelters of La Sarga can be visited on site as part of guided tours offered through the Archaeological Museum. Cementerio Sant Antoni Abat is part of the Ruta Europea de Cementerios Significativos, which is recognised as a European Cultural Route. The range therefore extends from very early settlement traces to places where more recent forms of urban and cultural memory can be seen.

Paths Through Nature and Landscape

For walks, cycling tours and travel away from classic cultural attractions, the Vía Verde de Alcoy offers a clearly described route: it is 10 km long and runs between pine trees and viaducts through the Parque Natural del Carrascal de la Font Roja. The route can be used on foot, by bicycle and in a wheelchair. This makes it possible to plan different forms of movement along the same path without losing sight of the specific route length.

The Parque Natural de la Sierra de Mariola was declared a nature park by the Valencian Government on 8 January 2002. On the Barranc del Cint route, it is possible to observe vultures near a reserve. Another striking natural area lies along the upper course of the Polop River: the area has water all year round and features large limestone rocks shaped by river erosion.

Alcoy is therefore suitable for travel planning that does not need to consider culture and landscape separately. The Betlem de Tirisiti, the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos, museum content and historic sites offer different focal points from the Vía Verde de Alcoy, the Barranc del Cint or the upper course of the Polop. Those looking for accommodation in Alcoy can take these different interests into account when choosing the length of their stay and weigh up urban history, digital interpretation, guided archaeology and nature trails.
