Beneixama between hiking trails, museums and regional festivals

Beneixama lies in the plain of the valley of the same name, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The Sierra de la Solana near Beneixama offers extensive hiking trails. This makes it a destination whose character is shaped by its landscape, local history and vibrant traditions.

Hiking between the valley and the sierra

The Camino de los Molinos begins at Plaza del Mesó in Beneixama. The PR-CV 52 hiking trail also passes the municipal accommodation facilities at Rita and La Talaeta near Beneixama. Beneixama’s official hiking route runs via the Ermita San Isidro, Alto dels Tres Pines, Senda de Toll Vell, Caseta de Castello, Casa dels Enginyers, Fuente de la Duenya and Alberg de Rita before returning to the Ermita San Isidro.

The Vía Verde del Xixarra can also be used on foot, by bicycle and in a wheelchair. Beneixama is part of the Vía Verde del Xixarra. The Camino del Cid leads to Beneixama, offering another thematic way to explore the routes associated with the town.

Museums and architectural history

Beneixama’s Museo Etnográfico is housed in the building of the former washhouse. It displays tools, everyday objects, furniture and books documenting the lives of Beneixama’s more recent ancestors. Anyone interested in the daily life of past generations will find tangible objects here rather than merely an abstract history of the town.

The parish church of San Juan Bautista was inaugurated in 1841. It has nine side chapels dedicated to various saints, as well as two large oil triptychs by the local artist José Navarro Ferrero. His artistic life is also the focus of the Museo Navarro Ferrero, which addresses the various artistic movements that influenced him.

The Archaeological Museum of Beneixama is located in the Torre Atalaya. The Torre Atalaya of Beneixama is already mentioned in 1254 and shows a clear Almohad construction phase; a second construction phase dates from the period after the conquest. In Beneixama, you will therefore encounter both archaeological evidence and art and religious architecture.

Festivals around La Talaeta and El Salze

Various events connected with the festival of San Isidro Labrador take place in the natural setting of Paraje La Talaeta. Celebrations are held on the weekend closest to the feast day of San Isidro. From a 740-metre-high plateau about 2 km from Beneixama, the Ermita de San Isidro Labrador near La Talaeta offers sweeping panoramic views over the Vinalopó Valley. Since the chapel was inaugurated, a pilgrimage to it has taken place every year on the occasion of the festival of San Isidro.

The Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer was built in honour of Saint Vincent Ferrer, the patron saint of the hamlet of El Salze. The Fiestas de San Vicente Ferrer of El Salze are celebrated on the Monday of the second week of Easter in honour of Saint Vincent Ferrer. At the Festes de Moros i Cristians en honor a la Divina Aurora de Beneixama, the Soldadesca preserves various elements that have remained unchanged since the late 18th century.

Local cuisine and town life

The “Beneixama al carrer, xe que bo!” fair takes place at the beginning of October and presents activities and products from local businesses and associations. Figatell, a traditional culinary speciality of Beneixama, is a fitting accompaniment.
