Elche between palm groves, history and coastal wetlands

Elche combines a palm landscape with historical heritage and ecologically valuable coastal areas. The Palmeral de Elche is a unique example of Arab agricultural practices on the European continent. At the same time, it forms a landscape of date palm groves and sophisticated irrigation systems that were established towards the end of the 10th century when the Muslim city of Elche was founded.

Palm Groves and Traditional Work

The Ruta del Palmeral is a circular route through Elche’s palm groves. The defining tree is the date palm, scientifically known as Phoenix dactylifera.

At the Museo del Palmeral, you can access a palm grove and see traditional irrigation systems as well as the typical crops associated with them. A municipal workshop belonging to the museum also demonstrates the traditional plaiting technique used for Palma Blanca. At Huerto San Plácido, the experience includes demonstrations of climbing palm trees, harvesting dates, covering the fruit bunches, pruning and manual pollination. A visit to a date farm with a date tasting is also offered as a visitor experience in Elche’s palm grove.

Architecture and History in Elche

The Baños Árabes are among the few surviving examples of Islamic public architecture in the Comunitat Valenciana. They are open to the public. The former hammam was divided into three areas for cold, warm and hot water; the current design reconstructs the former atmosphere and the sounds of that time.

La Calahorra is an Islamic fortress from the Almohad period. At the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century, it was incorporated as a watchtower into the defensive wall of Andalusian Elche. Today, it houses a permanent exhibition with important paintings from the city’s art collection, including works from various artistic periods spanning the 17th to the 20th century. The Torre dels Vaïllos, on the other hand, is a former defensive and watchtower. From its elevated position, you can view the palm grove north of the city.

The La Alcudia archaeological park covers a 10-hectare excavation site that was inhabited by various cultures between the 5th millennium BC and the 8th or 9th century AD and includes the important ancient city of Ilici. At the Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche, the history of the local area and the communities that inhabited it is the main focus.

Festivals, Museums and Traditional Ways of Life

The Misteri d’Elx is associated with the Basilica of Santa Maria and the streets of Elche’s old town and can be traced back to the middle of the 15th century. The fully sung performance in two acts takes place on 14 and 15 August. If you cannot attend this performance, the Museo Municipal de la Fiesta offers an alternative visit dedicated to the Misteri d’Elx. The Museo de la Virgen displays artistic and historical heritage connected with Elche’s patron saint.

The Museo Escolar de Puçol offers guided tours of a traditional farmhouse, former agricultural work and the town’s shops. Pupils aged 6 to 11 take on the role of guides. The Casa-Museo de l’Hort dels Ponts illustrates the traditional way of life in a house built in 1900 and its adjoining garden among palm trees. On display are irrigation channels, vegetable cultivation, fruit trees and furniture more than one hundred years old.

Coast, Wetlands and Birdlife

Elche’s coastal area combines dune systems and coastal wetlands of high ecological value. These areas provide habitats for birds as well as opportunities for birdwatching. The ponds of Clot de Galvany are particularly important for the area’s birdlife and biodiversity.
