Benitachell between the sea and cultural landscape

Benitachell combines impressive coastal landscapes with paths through a cultural landscape shaped over centuries. Around Cala del Moraig, short walks, cliff paths, and more challenging descents lead to coves, caves, and geologically interesting formations. Inland, terraces, dry-stone walls, wells, and vineyards recall the area's agricultural history. This gives Benitachell different points of interest for a stay: you can combine days by the coast, hikes, historic traces, and regional cuisine.

Coves, caves, and coastal views

Cala del Moraig cannot be reached by vehicle. The car park is located above the descent near the beginning of the road to the cove; from there, visitors continue on foot to the beach. Next to Cala del Moraig is the Cova dels Arcs, a sea cave with large natural arches that formed over time through the effect of water on the rock. The cave can be reached from the beach and is believed to have formed over a period of 60,000 years.

The Ruta Falla del Moraig leads to a viewpoint overlooking the whole of Cala del Moraig to the north, with Cap de la Nau in the background. The short, linear route is considered easy, extends for 275 metres, and takes around 30 minutes. In its final section, it reaches an area of geological interest featuring the Moraig Fault, the Vasenilla, as well as formations and drainage channels shaped by water and tectonic movements.

Paths with history and nature

For longer coastal experiences, the Ruta dels Penya-segats 1 runs along the cliffs. Mediterranean vegetation accompanies the route, and visitors can also explore old caves once used by fishermen. The Ruta Camí de la Serp – Puig de la Llorença – Cala Llebeig complements this landscape with old mule tracks, agricultural terraces with dry-stone walls, lime kilns, and the remains of a medieval quarry.

Cala Llebeig lies between the municipalities of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Teulada-Moraira. The secluded small cove can only be reached on foot or by sea and preserves old fishermen's huts as well as traces of former coastal surveillance. On the Ruta dels Testos, ropes are required for the final three sections of the descent. These differences between short paths, cliff routes, and descents with special requirements help you plan excursions to suit your daily rhythm.

Wells, winegrowing, and local cuisine

The inland area is also part of Benitachell's character. The Ruta Abiar-Calistros passes through terraced hills where Muscat grapes are predominantly grown. At Pous de l'Abiar, there is a recreation area and a system of natural wells that supplied the population with water until the 1970s. The Museu al Vent offers self-guided routes that explore Benitachell's heritage from its own cultural perspective, with stops in the town centre, the rural landscape, and along the coast.

Traditional gastronomy is shaped by fishing and agriculture. It includes salted dishes, sweets with Arab influences, artisanally produced wine, and Vino Moraig. Broad beans are the focus in spring, while Muscat grapes take centre stage in summer. The Mitjafava Fest takes place in April during the harvest of this legume.
