Discover Gaianes: Albufera, Trails and Local History

Gaianes combines the Albufera of Gaianes with trails through the landscape and historic sites within the municipality. The Albufera was restored as a protected natural area in 2004. This brings nature observation, outdoor activity and local history together in Gaianes within a compact thematic area.

Trails through the landscape and nature

A 2.6-kilometre walking trail leads from Gaianes through the dry-farming landscape to the Albufera. The Albufera route also includes a viewpoint that projects into the lagoon and enables birdwatching. If you would like to combine a manageable distance with a specific natural destination, this trail provides a clear framework for your planning.

For a significantly longer tour classified as difficult, there is the PRCV 184. The ascent route to Benicadell takes approximately eight hours. Its southern ascent features dryland flora including sage, pebrella, thyme and rue. The approximate duration, difficulty level and plant life make this route a different option from the short walk to the Albufera.

Cyclists also have their own route format within the municipality: there is a 4.5-kilometre mountain-bike circuit with an approximate elevation difference of 250 metres. The different lengths and demands of the trails help you weigh up a short exploration of the town and landscape, a challenging mountain route and a mountain-bike circuit.

History and culture in Gaianes

The Ethnological Museum is housed in a former olive mill with its original machinery. It shows the individual stages of olive oil production.

A central historical landmark is the Church of Sant Jaume Apòstol. It was built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier mosque. Around 1542, it became a parish church and was separated from the parish of Cocentaina. The main altar dates from around 1848 and is an example of the church’s neoclassical furnishings. The church is open during services.

On the Calvary hill stands the Hermitage of Sant Francesc de Paula, which dates from the early 18th century. The Julia Pérez Cultural Centre is a former convent that was converted into a cultural space for Gaianes. Both sites complement the town’s religious and social history with different historic settings.

Gaianes’s annual cultural calendar includes patron saint festivities in honour of the Mare de Déu de la Llum. For a shorter circuit, there is also a route from the town centre lasting approximately 40 minutes and involving hardly any difficulty. This allows local history and a short walk to be incorporated into your travel plans, while the Albufera route, the PRCV 184 and the mountain-bike circuit focus on other experiences.
