Tibi between Water History, Festival Traditions and Mountain Landscapes

Tibi is located in the protected Serra del Maigmó i Serra del Sit landscape area. This protected area is an important natural environment within the Mediterranean mountain landscape, with numerous habitats as well as plant and animal species.

Waterways and routes through Tibi

The Ruta L’ull de la Font conveys Tibi’s special historical relationship with water, its water channels and the history of the Pantano de Tibi. Construction of this reservoir began in 1580 and was completed in 1594. It serves to store river water for the Huerta de Alicante.

Several local and hiking routes focus on different aspects. The Ruta A L’Aljub leads from the Balcón de Alicante to the l’Aljub residential development. It is classified as a moderately difficult route covering 2.5 kilometres each way, with an elevation gain of 305 metres. The Ruta Castillo leads to Castillo de Tibi, a medieval fortress offering panoramic views of the region. The Ruta Casco runs on foot through the old town and to viewpoints with panoramic vistas.

For a longer tour, La Villa de Tibi is available as an 8.5-kilometre circular route. Its stated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes, and its difficulty level is moderate. The different route lengths and profiles help you choose whether to focus your planning on a short local circuit, a more challenging ascent or an extended circular tour.

Fortress, Church and Religious Traditions

Castillo de Tibi is attributed to Arab origins; at the same time, it was a strategic communication point between the inland area and the coast. On 28 December 2000, the castle was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The Parroquia de Santa María Magdalena dates from the 18th century, while its bell tower is attributed to a possibly Arab origin.

According to tradition, the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena is associated with an apparition of Saint Mary Magdalene to Juana Amat on 9 July 1445. A branch of the olive tree associated with this story is kept in the Camerino.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Mary Magdalene take place in Tibi from 20 July to 25 July and date back to the 15th century. The Entrà de les Vaques takes place from 21 July through and including 25 July. It is a centuries-old tradition in honour of Saint Mary Magdalene, the town’s patron saint, and is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Local. Its roots lie in the transhumance of fighting bulls; originally, it was associated with driving the cows from the river into the town.

The other dates are also distributed distinctly throughout the year. The winter festival Danzas de reinados moro y cristiano takes place in January and includes the Reinado Cristiano and Reinado Moro groups, traditional dances, music with charamita and drum, as well as the Subasta de Tonyes. The Feria Tradicional de Artesanía y Oficios de Tibi takes place on the penultimate weekend in October and showcases local handicrafts and typical products. The Romería to Casa de la Pedrera takes place on the Saturday closest to 28 November and commemorates the discovery of the Sagrada Forma Incorrupta in honour of Nostre Senyor Trobat.

Les Aixames, also known as Rodà d’aixames, is a tradition held on the evening of 24 December. During it, people gather at Plaça d’Espanya and walk through the town’s streets in small groups. The Tourist Info Tibi is located at Plaza d’Espanya 1, Tibi, 03109.
