The PR-CV 280 cycling route is 32 km long, has a low level of difficulty and takes a total of 7 hours and 30 minutes. It passes through a large part of the municipality of Hondón de las Nieves and runs through the extensive valley with gentle hills and traditional vineyards, almond groves and olive groves, surrounded by high mountains. Its length, difficulty and duration give you a clear basis for dividing your days between cycling and other local activities.

Festivals and Built Traditions

The Fiestas in honour of the Virgen de las Nieves take place in Hondón de las Nieves every odd-numbered year from 1 August to 5 August; 5 August is the main day. The Fiestas de Moriscos y Cristianos take place in the first half of July and include, among other events, parades, street processions, tastings and a mascletà. This means there are two different festival periods in the annual calendar that you can take into account when planning a culture-focused trip.

There are 18 shepherds’ huts in varying states of preservation in the municipality of Hondón de las Nieves. They are dry-stone structures built without mortar; their roofs are generally constructed using the corbelled-dome technique. The town hall stands on Plaza de la Villa, while the clock tower is considered of interest to visitors.

Events with a Regional Character

The Fiesta de San Isidro Labrador includes a pilgrimage at the weekend around 15 May from the Ermita de San Isidro to the church and back. On Sunday, the programme also includes poetry readings and a tasting of typical products. The Jornadas Culturales include gachamiga competitions, book fairs, medieval markets, hiking excursions and painting exhibitions.

Último Jueves takes place on the last Thursday before Lent. In the past, local residents went to the countryside to eat, among other things, roast rabbit, tortilla and torrijas; folk songs have survived from this tradition. The historical character of this custom remains particularly tangible through the songs handed down over the years.

Hondón de las Nieves has 1,200 hectares of irrigated land used to grow fruit trees and table grapes with the protected designation of origin “Uva de Mesa Embolsada Vinalopó”.
