Discover Ondara: History, Festivals and Rural Paths

Ondara combines historic architecture, traditional festivals and rural paths. Those interested in local history, regional customs and a trip with varied daily rhythms will find specific points of interest here: a protected cultural heritage site, variants of pilota valenciana, a November festival, traces of historic irrigation and a route between country paths and the town area. This allows families and couples to decide whether culture, festival traditions or outdoor activity should be the main focus.

Historic buildings in the town area

The Casa del Mayorazgo is a building protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest. The Ferrando family built it in the first half of the 19th century with neoclassical elements. The Església de Santa Anna also offers clear architectural points of reference: its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, while the nave is covered by a barrel vault. The interior paintings are by Salvador Gil Camarena.

The Plaza de Toros of Ondara is a Neo-Mudéjar building and was inaugurated in 1901. The Convento de Mínimos was built in the first half of the 17th century and has a central cloister. Together, these buildings span several periods and make Ondara particularly interesting for visitors who see architecture not merely as a backdrop, but as a way to access local history.

Festivals, sport and regional cuisine

Various forms of pilota valenciana can be played at Ondara’s Trinquet, including escala i corda, raspall, pilota grossa and rebotet. The Fira de Novembre takes place in November; this traditional popular festival dates back to 1690. It also includes a medieval fair during the first festival weekend. On the festival weekends, a food fair at the Prado is part of the Fira de Novembre. In this way, sport, history and regional cuisine come together in a clear seasonal focus.

Traces of water and history

The irrigation systems expanded in Ondara during Muslim rule are still in existence today. The Torre del Rellotge was established as a museum and an interpretive space dedicated to local history; the Torre del Reloj is the only surviving tower of Ondara’s former Muslim castle. The Llavador was inaugurated in 1950 and served as a washhouse. It used running water from an irrigation system fed from the weir and permanently houses a series of photographs and posters about its past.
