Earthquake History and Irrigation Culture

The Museo del Terremoto is located in the last surviving rebuilt residential house from the period following the 1829 earthquake in Almoradí. The visit takes approximately 45 minutes, is only possible with advance reservation and is limited to a maximum of six people per visit. This makes it possible to incorporate this small, clearly defined cultural attraction into your daily itinerary.

The parish church of San Andrés is considered the most important surviving architectural monument in Almoradí’s historic urban fabric. The water landscape also has a pronounced historical dimension: the Azud de Alfeitamí is one of the most important irrigation structures along the lower Segura; its first versions date from the late 16th century. The Juzgado Privativo de Aguas del Azud de Alfeitamí manages and distributes irrigation water within its area of jurisdiction.

Routes through the Huerta and the Town

The Ruta del Agua is a visitor route through Almoradí’s irrigation heritage. Among other places, it passes the old bridge, irrigation channels and drainage ditches, as well as viewpoints over the Huerta, and also leads through the town centre. In this way, it connects technical structures, landscapes and urban orientation along a single route.

For walks through the cultivated areas, the Ruta de La Huerta – El Paisaje de Sequeros offers a circular route of approximately four kilometres. The route passes through traditional cultivated areas and local wildlife and plant life. The Ruta de Los Mazones, by contrast, follows the historic livestock trail Colada de los Pastores, passes through Almoradí and can be completed in approximately two hours. The different details on route length and duration help you choose suitable activities for the rhythm of each day.

Natural Area along the Segura

The protected natural area of Hoyo Serrano was designated in 1994, covers approximately 85 hectares and lies 42 percent within the territory of Almoradí. Aleppo pine shapes the landscape in Hoyo Serrano; the area contains an ecosystem with amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Alongside the cultivated areas of the Huerta, this places an explicitly protected natural area at the centre of attention.

The Sotos along the Segura River are restored riverside areas along the river and part of a Green Corridor. They include, among other things, picnic areas and play areas for children. These specific features also make the riverside area appealing for breaks and time together outdoors, without requiring a particular excursion programme to be planned.

Market, Festivals and Local Daily Life

Almoradí’s weekly market takes place on Saturdays, extends for more than one kilometre and was awarded the distinction of a market of provincial tourist interest in 2011. The Feria and the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos combine religious tradition, the identity of the Huerta, a historic fair, music and broad participation by the local population. The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos can be traced back to 1978 and therefore represent a festival tradition documented over several decades.

The Casino Society of Almoradí is also part of the town’s social history. It was founded in 1882 and later developed into a historic venue for dances, carnival celebrations, discussion groups and presentations. A culinary speciality is Pava borracha, traditionally served in three courses, or „vuelcos“. The Árbol de los Mazones was planted almost a century ago and is considered one of the last monumental trees in the comarca.
