Settlement Layout at the Nature Park
Herbeset has no permanent residents; some houses have been restored as summer residences. From the access road, the hamlet presents a few closely packed houses. This compact arrangement of houses contrasts with the paths through pine forests, ravines, and sections with dry-stone walls.
Hiking Trails with Different Stages
The GR 331 Els Ports – Camí de Conquesta is a 166 km circular hiking trail divided into 15 stages, and it includes Herbeset. You can take its stage structure into account if you would like to include the hamlet as part of this circular trail. For longer hiking plans, the sequence of stages provides a different framework from a single path to the hamlet.
The ninth stage of the GR 331 leads from Morella to Herbeset over 12.2 km; the estimated walking time is 3 hours and 3 minutes. For this section, allow just over three hours of walking time.
The PR-CV 373 Pereroles – Herbeset is the shorter connection by comparison: the linear hiking trail is 7 km long, with an estimated duration of 2 hours and 22 minutes. It leads through a pine forest to the Barranc d’Herbeset and then to the path by the cemetery, as well as viewpoints over Herbeset. The cemetery is one of the village’s points of interest. The starting point is therefore at Pereroles, while the longer stage begins in Morella.
The PR-CV 215 offers another sequence of landscapes. It leads through pine forests, ravines, and sections with dry-stone walls before reaching the entrance to Herbeset. Along this section, dry-stone walls stand alongside the natural forms of the forest and ravine.
Churches and Local Tradition
The Church of San Miguel stands at the highest point of the hamlet. The Church of Sant Miquel is known for its Romanesque portal. San Miguel thus represents the elevated position in the hamlet, while Sant Miquel refers to a specific architectural detail.
The San Isidro festival is also part of Herbeset’s local character. It forms part of Morella’s cycle of Rollos and Primas. Traditional pastries are at the center of the celebrations, and the Cofradía de Herbeset distributes traditional Rollos. Through the Morella cycle, the festival also remains connected to the municipality.
