Soneja between the Old Town, La Dehesa and its waterways

Soneja combines a historically shaped townscape with the natural area of La Dehesa. The Old Town features an Arab street layout that can be explored on foot. On the eastern edge of the municipality lies the protected municipal natural area of La Dehesa, covering 681.398 hectares and featuring a temporary lagoon in the mountains that is considered unique in the Valencian region. Part of the area has been designated a flora micro-reserve because of its rare, endemic or endangered plant species; La Dehesa is also home to animal species classified as protected and of particular interest.

Historic buildings in the townscape

At Plaza del Mesón, church architecture, 18th-century manor houses and the modernist façade of a former theatre and cinema building come together. The chapel of San Francisco Javier was consecrated in 1692 and still preserves its original bell, cast in 1691. Cristo de la Providencia is also known as Cristo del Calvario and is a 17th-century building that was converted into a fortress in 1840. The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel dates from the 18th century and has a particularly old set of bells.

The older architectural heritage includes the Antiguo palacio de los duques de Montellano, a manor house of Gothic origin that was probably built in the 14th or 15th century. The Muralla carlista consists of preserved remains of a rammed-earth wall built in 1840 during the First Carlist War and is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest, or BIC for short. The Horno de la Moratilla is a historic lime kiln that was used until the industrialisation of lime production. The Fuente de San Antón is associated as a historic feature in the town centre with the vernacular architecture of the Alto Palancia comarca.

Water, trails and nature experiences

The El Arco aqueduct dates from the 14th or 15th century and carried water to local mills, washhouses and gardens. The Fuente de San Juan was Soneja’s first public drinking-water fountain with running water, was inaugurated in 1891 and still receives water from the Minguet spring. The Ruta del Agua is a tourist route focused on water and historic water architecture and infrastructure.

A short hiking trail runs beside the La Dehesa visitor centre. The Ojos Negros Greenway runs along the edge of the town of Soneja. The Ruta Verde is an environmentally focused route featuring natural attractions for visitors to experience, while the Ruta Cultural explores Soneja’s historical and cultural heritage. Along the Palancia, a riverside path runs past large poplar trees; the scents of orange trees and other fruit trees in the Huerta add to the experience.

Museum and local life

The La Dehesa visitor centre has four rooms with information panels on Soneja’s geography, history, and ecological, natural, landscape, cultural and heritage resources. At the Museo del Yeso, you can follow the development of gypsum from its geological formation through industrial processing to its various uses. A hands-on gypsum workshop gives children the opportunity to create their own works.

The Fiesta de San Antón takes place every year on the weekend closest to 17 January and includes the blessing of animals. During this festival, the residents of Calle Larga traditionally offer participants a homemade pastry. The fire tradition includes sardines and meat grilled over a festival bonfire. During the L'Audaç tasting of craft-brewed and organically brewed beer, the entire brewing process is explained; this is followed by a tasting of six beers accompanied by a snack made from artisan products.

Getting to Soneja

If you are travelling by car, take the A-7 motorway towards Barcelona, then the A-23 towards Teruel as far as the Soneja/Sot de Ferrer exit.
