Castellon: City History, Mediterranean Beaches and Excursions
Accommodation in Castellon
Castellon combines an impressive history with museums, historic trails and 4.5 kilometres of Mediterranean beaches. The three beaches El Pinar, Gurugú and Serradal lie among pine trees and dunes. At the same time, fortifications, towers, religious buildings and exhibitions tell of different chapters in the city's history. Those wishing to weigh up cultural activities, days at the beach, walks and excursions for their trip will find a range of thematic focuses here.

City history along short routes and historic trails
Castell Vell is a fortification of Andalusian origin. The visitor route at Castell Vell is 400 metres long, has a positive elevation gain of 30 metres and includes seven signposted stops. The Muralla Medieval route offers another historical perspective. It follows preserved sections of the former city wall between Plaza Hernán Cortés and Calle San Luis and includes the remains of the Torre de San Pedro.
The privilege of relocation granted in 1251 is considered the origin of the city of Castelló. At the Villa Romana de Vinamargo, an exhibition guides visitors through a Roman villa that was inhabited from the 1st to the 5th century AD. The Tetuán air-raid shelter offers self-guided visits with exhibition panels and audiovisual material. The restored shelter illustrates the cruelty of wars and their consequences.
Ceramics are also among the city's visible cultural themes. The platform for Castelló's ceramic routes offers three geolocated tours that can be followed via virtual maps and QR codes distributed throughout the city. Those who look closely at architecture will encounter El Fadrí, a 15th-century bell tower with a spiral staircase of more than 200 steps. The Lonja del Cáñamo was built between 1606 and 1617 by Francisco Galiança on a rectangular floor plan and according to late Renaissance principles; in 1984, it was declared a historic-artistic monument. The Basílica de la Mare de Déu del Lledó was built over two older religious buildings dating back to the 14th century.
Museums, sea and family-friendly discoveries
The Eacc Espai D'Art Contemporani de Castelló and the Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló are both museums in the immediate vicinity. El Fadrí, a historic site, is also located nearby. The Museo de Bellas Artes de Castelló houses collections of painting, archaeology, ethnology and Valencian ceramics. The Museo de la Mar displays boats, fishing equipment, historic photographs and objects that explain Castelló's relationship with the sea. The Planetario de Castellón combines exhibitions and astronomical projections with an area dedicated to the Columbretes Islands. The Museo Municipal de Almazora, a museum, is also located in the surrounding area.
The coast can be explored through several specific beach themes. Playa del Serrallo, a beach, is located in the surrounding area. Playa Del Pinar, Playa la Torre and Playa DIvino, all beaches, are also nearby. El Pinar beach is next to Parque del Pinar and offers green spaces, natural shade, as well as opportunities for walking and cycling. Thus, alongside time by the sea, paths through green spaces and the option of a cycling tour provide different travel ideas.
Traditions, mobility and choosing your base
Castellón railway station is a hub for onward travel by local public transport or taxi. The Romeria de les Canyes is a special combination of city history and shared tradition. It takes place every year on the first Sunday of the Fiestas de La Magdalena; participants walk to the Ermita de La Magdalena to commemorate the origins of the city.
The Camí La Plana also connects the past with planned change: it is a historic route with cultural value of its own and is intended to be transformed into a 3.8-kilometre green cycle and pedestrian path. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Castellon, you can therefore first decide on your preferred focus: historic city, museums, Mediterranean beaches, walking, cycling or an excursion by public transport or taxi. The different themes give your trip a clear direction without requiring cultural and coastal experiences to be fitted into the same day's itinerary.
