Alfafar between natural landscapes and rice culture

A large part of Alfafar’s municipal area lies within Albufera Nature Park, a protected natural area with great natural and biological diversity, shaped predominantly by rice cultivation. The wetland associated with Alfafar provides a habitat for numerous bird species in the rice fields.

If you want to explore Alfafar through its landscape, you will encounter rice fields and wetlands side by side. Rice cultivation is also connected with the cuisine: All i Pebre and paella are among the local dishes. Nature observation and culinary interests therefore offer different ways to spend your days.

Rice history brought to life

The Alquería del Pi was built between the 17th and 18th centuries as a traditional agricultural building of the “casa-patio-cambra” type. During a visit, the various stages, tools and landscapes of rice cultivation are explained—from sowing and growth to harvesting. In the last century, rice cultivation was an important part of Alfafar’s economy. The Sindicato Arrocero, built in 1928, now houses the municipal library and has an eclectic-neobaroque façade.

Old town, church and Valencian architectural forms

Small ceramic altarpieces have been preserved on the façades along the streets of Alfafar’s old town. The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián y la Virgen del Don dates from the 18th century and is associated with an image that was found during the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia. The “Edgar Neville” municipal art gallery showcases various forms of art. In the Parque Alcosa district, the defining architecture is based on traditional Valencian construction.

Cycling route and landscape features

One suggested cycling route passes through Alfafar and other municipalities in the Albufera area. Landscape features along the route include irrigation canals and water-lifting structures.

Festivals and living traditions

During the Missa del Lledoner, the images of Sant Sebastià and the Mare de Déu del Do are taken to the Casa de la Mare de Déu. The route leads along Carrer del Mestre Barrachina and is accompanied by Valencian dances, tabal and dolçaina. Alfafar’s patron-saint festival also includes a solemn procession in honour of the Mare del Déu del Do, led by the Alfafar Balla Danses group.

Traces of working history

At Port del Tremolar, visitors can see two of the three threshing machines that were formerly located there. The Pasiego machine has a well-preserved set of machinery. The Caguetes machine lies in ruins; little more than its chimney remains.
