Moncada between cultural heritage and L’Horta Nord
Moncada combines tangible evidence from different eras with the expansive landscape of L’Horta Nord. The agricultural plain surrounding the town is characterised by paths alongside irrigation channels, which can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The channels give the plain a visible structure. For walks and bike rides, this part of the landscape can be planned as a separate section alongside Moncada’s historical sites and themes.
Archaeological eras in one place
The archaeological exhibitions at the Museu Arqueològic Municipal de Moncada are divided into four sections: prehistory, Iberian culture, the Roman world, and the Middle Ages, modern era and present day. The permanent exhibition covers artefacts from ancient civilisations through to the Middle Ages. The museum is located on the first floor of the former town hall.
Different chapters of the town’s history can also be encountered outside the museum. The parish church of San Jaime Apóstol preserves elements of an earlier Gothic temple. The ruins of an old Islamic dwelling can be seen in Plaza Madre Francisca. The Convento de las Hermanas Franciscanas de la Inmaculada is a sight worth visiting in Moncada. A silk museum can also be visited in Moncada. This gives culture enthusiasts a range of historical themes in Moncada: religious architecture, residential ruins, a convent and a silk museum.
Tradition and regional experiences
The Misteri de la Passió is a traditional Holy Week event in Moncada and was declared an event of tourist interest in 1967. The year 1967 refers to the historical classification of the declaration and is not the date of the event.
The Ruta Cavanilles is also known as the Ruta de los Iberos. It draws on the botanist’s work in Moncada and reveals the remains of an old Iberian road surface, the “carriladas”. For culture enthusiasts, the route combines botanical history with a specific archaeological detail. The archaeological traces along the route extend the archaeological theme beyond the exhibition and into the landscape.
Day-trip destinations in the surrounding area
Several other cultural destinations can be found around Moncada: Castell d'Albalat dels Sorells Castle, the Patio de los Silos Museum, the Museo de Geologia Universitat de Valencia and the Museo de historia natural. The destinations range from regional history and geology to natural history.
For different interests during the day, the area around Moncada offers Valencia Zoo, Playa La Malvarrosa beach, the Mirador El Tos Pelat La Puebla De Vallbona viewpoint and Cabeç Bord mountain. In Moncada, these destinations can be planned separately according to the desired focus for the day.
