Church, Landmark and Evolving Local History
A prominent cultural landmark is the Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora. The Gothic church dates from the 16th century, is classified as a monument and has the protection status “Declaración BIC singular GVA”. Its construction period and protection status make it an important example of Utiel’s historical heritage, without requiring any additional characteristics.
The Bodega Redonda also combines local history and wine culture. This architectural landmark dates from 1891 and is connected with the arrival of the railway in 1885. The building houses a permanent wine museum, considered unique in the Valencian Community. On display are numerous different wine brands from D.O.P. Utiel-Requena, as well as utensils and equipment used over the years to produce wine.
Experiencing Wine and Understanding Underground History
A 1-hour-and-30-minute guided tour leads through nine underground cellars and to an air-raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War. This makes the connection between viticulture and local history particularly vivid. In Utiel’s historic centre, there are estimated to be around 240 underground cellars. This cellar heritage originated from an extensive network of underground passages created after the conquest of Utiel in the 13th century.
Utiel is also part of the Ruta del Vino Utiel-Requena. This visitor route includes wine-related experiences and offerings, with wineries, wine shops and various other businesses taking part. The culinary side includes traditional sausages, which are considered recommended accompaniments to the wines in Utiel and are recommended for tasting.
Honey, Wax and Traditional Craft Worlds
The Almázar, Museo de la Miel y la Cera, dates back to the 18th century. It displays a device used to extract wax from honeycombs. Information panels and exhibits provide insights into bees, the history of beekeeping, transhumance, production and the associated gastronomy. The museum thus broadens the perspective on Utiel to include subjects extending beyond wine.
Hiking Through the Sierra del Negrete
The PR-CV 177.2 El Negrete hiking trail begins at the Área recreativa del Remedio and initially heads southeast. It then runs through the Sierra del Negrete, between vineyards and past monumental trees such as the pino de las Cuatro Garras and the olmo de Estenas.
