Serra between the Calderona landscape and local history

Serra lies in the heart of the Serra Calderona. More than 50 underground cavities, caves and shafts are scattered throughout the municipality. This landscape complements the trails, historic buildings and regional cuisine with a distinctive natural feature.

Hiking in the Serra Calderona

The springs of Serra are places to stop and relax for hikers and visitors in the heart of the Calderona. The GR-10 variant through Serra provides a circular route that begins at Serra Town Hall, passes through the town and covers large parts of the municipality.

The Gorrisa route passes through the municipality of Serra, follows the GR-10 to Font de Deula and continues to the summit of Gorrisa, which offers good views. The Rebalsadors route is a circular hike that begins at Serra Town Hall, passes through the town centre and reaches a Gorrisa forest track via La Pobleta road. The yellow Portaceli route is a marked trail in the Serra Calderona Natural Park.

Valencian heritage in the town and surrounding area

The Ruta de les Escultures is an urban tour through Serra’s cultural, ethnological and monumental heritage. At the Calvari de Serra, stepped terraces feature the 14 Stations of the Cross in white chapels that imitate the Gothic style.

Serra Castle is a fortification dating from the 8th to the 9th century. It stands on the mountain of the same name at an elevation of 536 metres near the town and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Torre del Señor is an Islamic tower from the 9th century on Cantó de la Torre street within the municipality of Serra and is also classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

The Cartuja de Portaceli was the first Carthusian monastery founded in the Valencian lands and was established in 1272. A Gothic aqueduct from the 15th century is attached to it. The Museu de l'Oli is housed in an oil mill from the late 19th century that was restored by the municipality of Serra, in the town centre between the church and the Torre del Señor. Serra Church was completed in 1800 and built by Francisco Pechuan in the neoclassical style.

Regional cuisine and festivals

Traditional Serra cuisine includes olla amb bledes, sopa coberta and olla amb carabassa. The Festa de Sant Roc is recognised by the Valencian Community as a festival of provincial tourist interest; its main event is the Baixà de Sant Roc on the night of 15 to 16 August. The Fira de la Calderona-Dia de la Cirera is recognised as a festival of tourist interest by the Valencian Community and includes a market for local and craft products, guided tours, traditional craft workshops and the distribution of cherries to visitors.
