Venta del Moro combines the gorges of the RĂo Cabriel with wine traditions, festival customs and paths through a distinctive Valencian landscape. The Hoces del Cabriel lie entirely within the municipality of Venta del Moro on the Valencian left bank of the RĂo Cabriel. Cliffs, winding rock faces and striking rock pinnacles shape the river landscape; eagles and other birds of prey live on the rock pinnacles.
Natural areas and paths along the RĂo Cabriel
The information centre of the Hoces del Cabriel Nature Park is located in Venta del Moro. Its exhibition focuses on the RĂo Cabriel and its ecosystem, providing a concrete introduction to the area's natural features. The PR-CV 344 is a circular hiking route starting at the Fuente la Oliva recreational area in Venta del Moro. It leads into the Hoces del Cabriel, passes through the Hoz de Vicente and is of geological and environmental interest. The blue route Venta del Moro–Puente de Vadocañas is also part of the nature park.
Canoeing, road cycling and mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, trekking, kayaking and river SUP are available around the RĂo Cabriel. The range therefore extends from activities on the water to routes on foot or by bicycle. The Comunitat Valenciana is also home to one of the large remaining intact forest areas, where deer, Iberian ibex and wild boar can be found.
Wine and regional cuisine
Bodega Neleman is an organic and vegan winery in Casas del Rey, in Venta del Moro and in the Hoces del Cabriel Nature Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It offers seasonal visits to the vineyard as well as wine tastings throughout the year. During Venta del Moro's summer festivities, the Certamen de Vinos y ExhibiciĂłn GastronĂłmica takes place in August; the event offers the opportunity to taste wines and dishes from the region.
Churches, customs and historic buildings
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto in Venta del Moro has the status of a Bien de Relevancia Local. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Las Monjas features a design influenced by Gothic architecture. The local festival culture includes the tradition of the Mayos: on the night of 30 April, musical processions take place through Venta del Moro. The Judas tradition is observed on Easter Sunday; for this occasion, the Quintos make a figure from cloth and straw, which is hung from the church tower.
The restored cave winery of Jaime Latorre is located on Calle Huertos in the historic centre of Venta del Moro. It is a small winery dating from the mid-19th century. In the extensive municipality, there are numerous underground cellars connected to houses that were traditionally used for producing and storing wine. A passageway dating from around 1570 has an unusual construction in the form of a single arch with a large span and is situated in a natural setting.
