Torre Baja between the Ebrón, memory and rural trails

Torrebaja combines riverside landscapes, rural heritage and marked trails. The PR-CV 131.3 Ruta del Ebrón follows the Ebrón River to Torrebaja, where it joins the Turia. The town also lies along several signposted short-distance hiking trails and mountain-bike routes: PR-V 131.3 Ruta del Ebrón, PR-V 131.5 Ruta del Turia, PR-V 131.9 Ruta de los Barrancos, R2 Ruta del Turia, R4 Ruta de la Loma Romance and R6 Ruta del Rodeno. The range of options therefore includes cultural and historical themes as well as excursions into the countryside.

Casa-Museo and the history of the town

The Casa-Museo de Torrebaja houses an ethnographic collection covering agriculture, livestock farming, domestic work and traditional occupations. In the Sala de la Memoria, it preserves graffiti from the Spanish Civil War and displays objects from the conflict. The Casa Museo de Torrebaja is recognized as a permanent museographic collection by the Comunitat Valenciana and is integrated into the Valencian Museum System.

Visits to the Casa-Museo de Torrebaja can be arranged on request through Torrebaja Town Hall. This makes it possible to enhance a stay with an insight into the region’s working and everyday history, as well as with the surviving evidence of the Civil War.

The Torreón de los Picos also represents Torrebaja’s built heritage. The square manor tower was built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries and features Baroque ornaments. On the outskirts of the town stands the Ermita de San José, near the former Molino de San José and Molino del Señor mills. The Molino de San José was the last watermill built in the Rincón de Ademuz.

Historic trails and distinctive landscapes

The Ruta Huellas de la Guerra Civil en Torrebaja includes a mountain section with trenches and machine-gun nests, as well as a section in the town center with air-raid shelters and other evidence of the bombings. At Loma del Montecillo, there are also signposted trenches and machine-gun nests from the Spanish Civil War. The Villar de Orcheta archaeological site is an abandoned settlement of Torrebaja associated with remains from the Spanish Civil War.

The Ruta del Agua de Torrebaja is a clearly defined route: it is 3.5 km long, has an elevation difference of 8 m and begins in Torrebaja next to the Aula de la Naturaleza. Along the way, it passes the Molino de San José. The Los Aljezares gypsum kilns comprise more than sixty former gypsum kilns of architectural and ethnographic value; they can be reached via a signposted rural path.

At Paraje del Montecillo, you can learn about the geology of the Rincón de Ademuz and its fossils. Representative rocks from different geological formations are displayed there, and the site also offers extensive views. The Presa de Torrebaja is a reservoir on the lower Ebrón, shortly before its confluence with the Turia. It includes a clear, cold-water pool and tables for summer outdoor stays.

Annual cycle and further destinations

Torrebaja’s Fiestas Mayores are celebrated in the last week of August in honor of Santa Marina and San Roque. Together with the Casa-Museo, the historic trails, the mills and the scenic spots, they create a varied picture of the town between culture, nature and the region’s past.
