Natural landscapes along the Cabriel
Villargordo del Cabriel offers different perspectives on nature and the landscape. In the Parque Natural de las Hoces del Cabriel, kayaking is one of the possible activities. Along the river, you can observe protected golden eagles, Bonelli’s eagles and eagle owls. The valley also includes well-preserved riparian forests with poplars, willows and tamarisks, as well as reed beds. This brings water, rock, woodland and birdlife together within a compact thematic area.

From Villargordo del Cabriel, you can reach the striking rock pinnacles of Los Cuchillos and the Fuenseca valley in the Hoces del Cabriel landscape. Another connection with the landscape can be found at the highest point in the municipal area: from there, you can enjoy views of the nature park; it is also home to a forest monitoring station. The Embalse de Contreras is likewise part of Villargordo del Cabriel’s natural and landscape heritage.
Trails for thoughtful day planning
The Ruta Amarilla from Villargordo del Cabriel to Vadocañas is a linear historic trail. It connects the town with the Cabriel River and the former Vadocañas bridge. The route is 16 kilometres long, takes approximately four and a half hours one way and has a moderate difficulty level. The marked PR-CV174 hiking trail runs through the municipal area of Villargordo del Cabriel. This makes it possible to consider a longer historic route and a designated hiking trail as different focuses when planning your trip.
Churches, towers and engineering structures
The parish church of Villargordo del Cabriel dates from the 18th century, was later extended and was built in the Neoclassical style. Inside, it houses a 17th-century image of Saint Cecilia and a 19th-century painting of the Virgen del Carmen. The Torre del Telégrafo de Villargordo del Cabriel lies northwest of the town on the Sierra del Romeroso. In 2011, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural together with the optical telegraph towers between Madrid and Valencia.
The Puente de Contreras also reflects the region’s technical development. It was built between 1825 and 1852 as part of the Carretera de las Cabrillas project and is regarded as one of the significant engineering structures of the 19th century. The Trincheras de Contreras offer a different historical perspective. They form part of a defensive network from more recent history, associated with the Peninsular War from 1808 to 1812, the Carlist Wars from 1846 to 1849 and from 1872 to 1876, and the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939.
Festivals and regional cuisine
The Fiestas Patronales in honour of San Roque include the Corrida de la Bandera and the distribution of the traditional “puñao”. A celebration with a bonfire also includes a communal “zahora” with meat, cured meats and potatoes roasted in the embers. The cuisine of this area includes hearty dishes such as Ollas, Gazpachos, Embutidos and Tortas magras, as well as olive oil and wines from the D.O. Utiel-Requena.
