Banyeres de Mariola: Castle, Mill Route and Nature
Banyeres de Mariola combines a landscape surrounded by mountains with history, trails, museums and a distinctive cuisine. The municipality is part of the Serra de Mariola Nature Reserve. Aromatic herbs and the special importance of water shape the character of this natural area and give the town a clear connection to the landscape.
Water, Mills and Trails
The Ruta dels Molins connects the three most important paper mills in Banyeres de Mariola among the nine mills that operated along the RÃo Vinalopó between the 18th and 20th centuries. Along the river, the route passes through a landscape with rich flora and fauna that has remained largely unchanged.
PRCV-4 is also available for short hikes. This internationally certified short-distance hiking trail is marked with parallel yellow and white stripes. The Via Verde de Las Virtudes runs through the municipality of Banyeres de Mariola between Bocairent and Beneixama.
Banyeres de Mariola railway station is located at kilometre 27.33 of the Via Verde de Las Virtudes. From there, a branch leads to the cigarette paper factory in l'Estació.
Castle, Views and Local History
The Castillo de Banyeres de Mariola is an Almohad polygonal castle complex whose origins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The Museu Fester is located in the Torre del Homenaje. From the upper part of the tower, visitors can see four provinces: Albacete, Murcia, Alicante and Valencia.
Below the Castillo de Banyeres de Mariola stands the Monumento de San Jordi. It commemorates the former location of the Ermita del Conjurador, which was traditionally associated with protection against storms and other misfortunes. The monument is located at a viewpoint overlooking the Sierra and the municipality's natural surroundings.
The religious buildings also reveal different historical layers. The Iglesia de Santa MarÃa is a neoclassical church with a Latin-cross floor plan, a Baroque façade and a Communion chapel designed in the Byzantine style in the 19th century. The Ermita de Santa MarÃa Magdalena is considered the oldest of the hermitages still standing in Banyeres de Mariola and is designed in the rural Gothic style.
Museums with Specific Themes
The Museu Arqueològic Torre Font Bona is housed in a 15th-century tower and displays archaeological remains from the Palaeolithic to the modern era. The Museu de la Farmà cia focuses on historic pharmaceutical equipment and explains the functions of characteristic areas such as the sales counter, back room and chemical laboratory.
The Museu de la Paraula preserves existing cultural heritage and exhibits and communicates its collections. The Museu Valencià del Paper offers a more hands-on approach to the paper-making tradition: by prior arrangement, it offers paper workshops for families and schoolchildren, guided tours and interpretive excursions.
In the Museu Fester, exhibition panels explain the history of the Moros i Cristians festivals in Banyeres de Mariola as well as the events held during the four-day celebrations.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The Moros i Cristians festival in honour of Sant Jordi takes place from 22 April to 25 April and has been recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest since 1988. The festival includes informal night-time parades. On 24 April, the Moors symbolise the conquest of the castle before it is reconquered by the Christians with ceremonial messages.
The Ermita de Santa MarÃa Magdalena is associated with masses, Correfocs and processions held in its honour in July.
The traditional cuisine of Banyeres de Mariola includes Olla de penques, borra, Gaspatxo and Pericana, as well as almond and anise pastries. Herbero is the town's characteristic traditional spirit and is made from anise and aromatic herbs.
