Todolella: Discover Medieval Heritage, Festivals and Landscapes

Todolella brings together medieval architecture, traditional festivals, distinctive landscapes and craft-based insights within a compact area. The town’s special character can be explored through its culture, paths, nature and local production.

Historic Townscape and Religious Architecture

The castle-palace of Todolella is a building featuring Gothic forms from the 16th century. It consists of four structures arranged around a central courtyard.

The parish church of San Bartolomé Apóstol is a medieval church dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Its ground plan follows the shape of a Greek cross, topped by a central dome. Inside, paintings and a 15th-century altarpiece preserve additional historical details.

The streets are also part of the townscape: they wind through the town and follow a distinctly medieval layout. As a result, historic forms can be encountered not only in individual buildings but also in the way the town itself unfolds.

La Mola, Bridge and Landscape

La Mola, the small mountain on which the castle stands, offers extensive views from its summit. Todolella’s Gothic bridge is located 1 km from the town on the CV-120, dates from 1397 and can be visited freely.

A walk from Todolella across the Gothic bridge leads after about 4 km to the abandoned settlement of Sarañana, also known as Saranyana. Remains of a Romanesque-style chapel have been preserved there; from there, you can continue to the 15th-century hermitage of San Cristófol, with its impressive views. In spring, the Font del Camaró emerges as a small waterfall dropping vertically between the rocks. From Forat del Lladre, you can look out over a densely vegetated gorge with striking rock bands.

Festivals and Traditional Dances

The Santantonà takes place around the middle of February. The festival includes a depiction of the saint’s life; he is then carried through the town’s streets in a procession that ends at a bonfire. During the August festivities in honour of San Bartolomé and San Redento, women in traditional dress perform Les Gitanetes, a choreography with colourful ribbons.

Les Danses Guerreres is a traditional dance of Iberian origin: eight men in typical dress perform thirteen steps and imitate a fight with sticks and swords. The dance is associated with Todolella’s patron-saint festivities in honour of Saint Bartholomew and is performed on the Sunday of these celebrations. They take place every year during the week of 24 August.

Observation, Tasting and Crafts

In the Santa Bárbara area, Todolella has an astronomical observation point. You must contact the municipal administration to use it. Jamones Alfredo Monfort offers guided tours of its facilities in Todolella. You will learn about the curing process and the ageing cellars, followed by a tasting of its own products.

Another distinctive feature can be seen in the streetscape: in Todolella, hemp is used in the traditional production of espadrilles, known as “espardenyes”. This work can often be seen there except on Sundays and public holidays.
